York Falls To Medgar Evers in CUNYAC Semifinals; Phipps Gets 1,000th Career Point

More news about: York (N.Y.)

Medgar Evers came out on fire to start the game. The Cougars were 9-13 from the field in the first 7:16 of the game, which helped propel them to an early 19-8 lead.  The hot shooting continued, and after ten minutes of play, Medgar Evers already had 31 points and a 16-point advantage.

York was able to get back in it though, thanks in part to junior guard Michael Edwards who came off the bench midway through the first half and gave the Cardinals a quick spark.  He quickly scored seven points to help York get back into the game. The Cardinals continued to cut into the lead from there and by halftime they trailed by seven points (45-38).

MEC's Jovan Deare had a big first half, netting 18 points, while shooting a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.  William Holley had ten first-half points for York.  Both teams shot well, as the Cougars drained 53 percent of their shots from the field, while York shot 52 percent.

York came out strong in the start of the second half, cutting the Medgar Evers lead to just three points (45-52) following a Tony Vails jumper with 16:12 to play. But the Cougars followed with a 14-5 run to make the score 59-47. The run was capped off by a three-point play by Lonell Jones at the 10:21 mark.

York tried to get back in the game from there but never got closer  than seven points the rest of the way.  York's William Holley fouled out with seven minutes remaining after leading the team with 18 points and six rebounds up to that point. His loss would prove difficult to overcome.

Rebounding was the key factor in the game.  York grabbed just 29 rebounds, only seven of which were on the offensive side.  They managed just five second-chance points. Conversely, Medgar Evers pulled down 50 rebounds and 24 on the offensive side.  They had 14 second-chance points.

Despite the loss, there was something to cheer about for York, as Phipps became the eighth player in York College history to reach 1,000 career points.  He came into the game with 999 career points and that final point proved to be difficult to get.  It wasn't until there was 1:23 remaining in the game that Phipps was able to connect on a pair of free throws, giving him 1,001  points in his four-year York career.

Deare finished with a  game-high 24 points, while Brian Johnson scored 21 points to lead Medgar Evers. CUNYAC Player of the Year, Winston Douglas, had seven points and a game-high 19 rebounds. In addition to Holley's 18 points, Tony Vails finished with ten points for York.

Medgar Evers (17-10) now will advance to take on the College of Staten Island in the championship game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

York finishes with a record 9-18.
