Bowman Scores 23 Points as Wilmington Men Beat B-W, 76-64, in Second Round OAC Tourney Game in Berea

BEREA, OHIO – Senior guard Antonio Bowman scored a game-high 23 points as the fifth-seeded Wilmington College men's basketball team defeated host and fourth-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College, 76-64, tonight (Tuesday, February 21, 2012) in a second round Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

With its win, Wilmington improves to 14-12 overall and beat B-W three times this season. Wilmington also advances to the OAC semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 23 and plays top-seeded John Carroll University (18-6) in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:30 p.m. B-W ends its season at 16-10 overall.


In addition to Bowman for Wilmington, freshman guard R.J. Leppert scored 17 points, sophomore forward Malcom Heard II had 13 and junior guard Brandon Candella had 12. Sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) led B-W with 23 points and sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) had 11 points.


The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at 19:49 mark when junior guard
Ben Umbel  (Poland/ Seminary) made a layup. After Wilmington took a 3-2 lead, B-W scored eight straight points, including three-pointers by Krakowiak  at 18:30 and Crowe at 17:36 for a 10-3 lead. The Quakers came right back with four straight points before a basket by B-W junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) made it a 12-7 lead for the Yellow Jackets.

B-W received a foul shot from sophomore center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus St. Francis deSales) at 12:00, a trey from sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) at 11:31 and another Umbel layup at 10:35 to build its largest lead at 18-7. Wilmington countered with a 15-0 run to take a 22-18 lead with 6:13 left when junior guard Brandon Candella canned his second triple.

B-W came right back to tie the game at 24-24 at 4:36 when sophomore All-OAC forward Kyle Payne coverted a three-point play. The game was tied again at 26-26 and 28-28 before Bowman scored six straight points, including a short jumper with 8.5 seconds left before the intermission, and Wilmington led at halftime, 34-28.


Wilmington opened the second half on an 8-0 run, including six points by Heard for a 42-28 lead with 17:36 left. B-W responded with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 44-44 when Selmek canned a pair of foul shots at 12:40.
The game of runs continued as Wilmington regained the lead with a 9-0 run to lead 53-44 with 9:09 left when Leppert canned a three-pointer.

The Men's OAC Championship Game is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the site of the highest remaining seeded team. The winner of the OAC Tournament receives an automatic berth in next week's NCAA Division III National Tournament.
