Hamline closed out on the game on a 9-2 run to turn a tie contest into a 65-58 MIAC victory over the Scots at the Leonard Center in the season-finale for both teams.
Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) provided 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to help lead the way for the Scots, while Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn.) led all Mac point producers with 18 points. Bert Yaffe (Fy., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) was 3-for-3 on three-pointers and finished with 13 points.
The Pipers, who used a full-court press to produce a 24-13 turnover advantage, were led by Mike Campbell with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Noah Aguirre and Brandon Rieg each tallied 13 points.
Macalester shot 50% on the day, compared to 37% for Hamline.
The Scots led 33-26 at the intermission, getting 10 points from Peters and eight from Marshall in the period. Campbell had 15 points for the Pipers in the second half and Hamline grabbed its initial lead of the period at 52-50 at the six-minute mark. The battle remained close until HU began its decisive run over the final 2:29.
Hamline finishes at 13-12 overall and 11-9 in the MIAC. HU tied Bethel and St. John's for fifth place but is the odd team out of the playoffs due to tiebreakers. Macalester closes out 1-24 overall, 1-19 in the MIAC.
