Buffalo State Falls Short at No. 16 Oswego, 78-73

OSWEGO, NY—No. 16 Oswego (21-3/17-0) rallied from a late 10-point deficit to push its regular-season SUNYAC winning streak to 32 games with a 78-73 win over visiting Buffalo State (18-6/11-6), despite 30 points by  Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts).

Simmons scored 22 of his points in the first half, and finished 10 of 18 from the field and 5 of 12 from 3-point range.  Ahmed Nagaya (Bronx/Astor Collegiate) added 18 points and eight rebounds, and Nico McLean (Amherst/Amherst) had six points, nine boards and four steals.

Buffalo State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but then trailed for most opening period and trailed 39-36 at halftime.  Oswego pushed the lead to nine at 50-41, but Buffalo State put together a 16-3 run and took a 57-53 lead.  The Bengals' lead swelled to as many as 10 at 73-63 with less than seven minutes to play.  The Lakers scored the last 15 points of the game, holding Buffalo State scoreless for more than six minutes to close the game and steal the win.

The difference in the game came at the free-throw line, as the Lakers outscored Buffalo State, 21-11 at the charity stripe.  Oswego made 17 more trips to the line than the Bengals, as Buffalo State committed 23 personal fouls, compared to 13 by the Lakers. 

Buffalo State will close out the regular season tomorrow at Cortland at 4 p.m.
