Rams Defeat Sage in Final Minutes

Albany, N.Y. - Farmingdale State defeated The Sage Colleges with a 62-58 victory on Saturday afternoon to improve to 18-5 overall and 14-2 in Skyline play. The Rams stand in 2nd place going into the final week of regular-season play, while the loss puts Sage at 10-13 overall and 5-11 in the conference.

Sage held a 29-27 lead at the break and lead by as many eight points (55-47) with 6:29 left to play. Tied at 58-58 with 1:29 left to play, Farmingdale junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a layup to break the tie and give the Rams the final lead of the game. Rookie Ibrahim Johnson (New York, N.Y.) made a lay-up with 0:22 on the clock, but failed to convert a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game.

Matthews finished with a double-double of 18 points and a school record 25 rebounds, his 21st consecutive double-double this season, which leads the Nation. He had 16 points and 17 rebounds in the second half to help the Rams to come from behind and collect the win, while also making seven blocks. Senior guard Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored 13 points, while senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished with 11 points.

Sage sophomore guard Mason Horne (Albany, N.Y.) and junior center Ryan Sager (Stuyvesant, N.Y.) each finished with a double-double. Horne tallied 16 points with 12 rebounds. Sager finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for the Gators. Junior forward Matt Farbotko (Rouses Point, N.Y.) posted 15 points with four rebounds.

Farmingdale State will host Maritime College next on Wednesday, February 15th at 7:00 p.m. The game will be Senior Night for Flournoy, Smith, Robert Adon and Ryan Tierney.
