Hobart earns Liberty League's top seed on Senior Day

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team wrapped up the Liberty League regular season championship on Senior Day in Bristol Gym. The Statesmen outraced Rensselaer 104-89 behind Joe Gibbons' game-high 26 points.

Gibbons, a transfer from Rensselaer, was 12-of-16 from the floor and made both of his free throw attempts. He netted 22 points in the first meeting with his old team. Richie Bonneyadded a double-double for Hobart on 21 points and 10 rebounds. Stefan Thompsoncontributed 13 points while Greg Stern and Connor Rehbaum both sank three 3-pointers for nine points. Matt Pebole was credited with seven points, seven rebounds, a game-high six assists, and three steals.
 
Matthew Pooley produced a team-high 17 points for the Engineers. Redon Qello, Jamie Zajac, and Matt Dixon scored 13, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Daniel Martin grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points.
 
RPI led by as many as nine in the first half and went up 36-30 on Qello's jumper with 6:18 remaining in the opening 20 minutes, but Hobart ended the session on a 20-14 run to carry a 50-49 lead into halftime.
 
The Engineers reclaimed the lead with the first basket of the second half and held it for most of the first three minutes, but the Statesmen seized control of the contest with a 19-2 run. Qello made two free throws for a 55-54 RPI edge, but Stern countered with a 3-pointer that gave Hobart the lead for good. Bonney, who scored nine points during the game-changing push, capped the run with a traditional 3-point play. The Statesmen maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
 
Hobart shot 52.9 percent from the floor and was 6-of-13 from long range. The Statesmen also made more free throws (26) than the Engineers attempted (21). RPI shot just 39.5 percent from the floor and was 10-of-33 from long range.
 
The win, coupled with wins by Vassar (58-57 at St. Lawrence) and RIT (73-71 over Skidmore), clinched outright Hobart's first Liberty League regular season title since 2004-05.
 
The Statesmen will return to action on Friday, Feb. 17 when they visit Bard (1-12, 4-18). RPI will travel to Skidmore (14-8, 8-5) also on Feb. 17.
