Men's Basketball Surges In Second Half Over Clarkson 63-54

POTSDAM, NY (February 10, 2012) -- Trailing 32-31 at halftime, the Vassar College men's basketball team opened the second half on fire with a 15-1 run en route to a 63-54 victory over Clarkson University in Liberty League action on Friday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Senior Nick Justiz attacked the basket for six points and added a 3-pointer to put Vassar up 46-33 five minutes into the second half. Junior Jon Herzog ignited the run with consecutive drives inside for four of his season-high 22 points.

The Brewers (7-14, 3-9 Liberty) continue the road trip against St. Lawrence University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Golden Knights (14-8, 7-6) host Bard College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Vassar's lead grew to as many as 16-points at 52-36 as the Brewers held a 20-6 points in the paint advantage in the second half. Despite a 29.6 shooting percentage, the Golden Knights cut the Vassar lead to single digits on two occasions, coming no closer than eight points. The Brewers shot 46.15 percent from the floor and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the second half, holding the Golden Knights to two free throws. Vassar controlled the glass with a 40-30 rebounding edge for the game.

In the first half, Vassar raced out to a 13-2 lead as Justiz and Herzog hit threes and Clarkson started off 0-for-8 from the field. The Golden Knights evened the score at 27-27 with a 10-0 run on four points apiece from John Coleman and Marques Charlton. Vassar regained the lead at 29-28 and 31-30 but Clarkson's Nate Uline scored the final basket of the half for a 32-31 lead at intermission.

Herzog posted a game-high 32 points. Justiz finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Johnny Mrlik just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Classmate Alex Snyder had seven points and seven boards.

Felix Llanos was Clarkson's lone player in double-figures with 19 points. Charlton tallied eight points and eight boards.
