CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College and Cornell College were a combined 25-of-46 from 3-point range Wednesday at Eby Fieldhouse, where the Kohawks used a 15-0 run in the first half to beat the Rams 72-67. It was the fourth-straight win over Cornell for Coe.
Neither team led by more than three in the first 9:27 of the game before Cornell went on a 7-0 run in 1:18 to take a 22-17 lead with 9:15 left in the first half. After the two teams exchanged 3-point baskets, junior David Mataloni (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) hit a jumper to spark a 15-0 Coe run in the next 3:08, as they took a 35-25 lead and never trailed again. Following Tyler Dawson's (Crystal Lake, Ill./South) layup with 5:09 left in the first half, Coe's only points would come from sophomore Andrew Wirth's (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) free throws with 2:50 left in the half, as the Kohawks led 37-31 at the break.
Senior Kevin Gaster (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) hit a pair of free throws :12 into the second half before Cornell scored six-straight points to make it a two point game with 18:36 to play. Back-to-back treys by Mataloni and Gaster put Coe's lead back to eight points, where it stood until Cornell went on an 8-3 run with 15:25 to play, cutting the lead to four. Cornell would get the lead to four again with 8:30 to play, but couldn't come any closer. Junior Seth Light (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) hit a pair of free throws with 5:00 to play before Mataloni hit another trey with 3:46 to play, as Coe took a 72-61 lead with 3:46 to play. Cornell's Reggie Greenwood scored six points in a :46 stretch, but neither team scored in the final 2:09, as Coe won 72-67.
Mataloni led five Kohawks in double figures with 19 points, as he connected on 5-of-8 3-point attempts. Junior Garrett Cross (Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) was 3-for-3 from 3-point range off the bench, finishing with 13 points. Gaster also hit three treys and added 13 points, while Wirth nailed three treys to get 11 points. Light added 10 points. Greenwood finished with a game-high 25 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Light had a team-high six rebounds, while having two assists, two blocks and two steals. Gaster had a career-high seven assists, while senior Jake Raney (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) tied a career-high with three assists. Mataloni and Cross each dished out a pair of assists. Gaster also blocked two shots and tied a career-high with four steals. Mataloni added three steals, while Wirth had two.
The Kohawks shot 14-of-26 from 3-point range (53.8%) and were 24-of-47 from the field (51.1%). The Rams were just as hot, as the were 11-of-20 (55.0%) from 3-point range and 25-of-50 from the field. Coe's 14 treys were the second time this year they have hit that mark, the second most in school history. It is the fifth time they have scored 30 or more points from 3-point range.
With Dubuque's loss to Wartburg Wednesday, the Kohawks moved to within a half game of Luther for first place in the Iowa Conference standings. The Norse are 10-3, while Coe and Dubuque are both 10-4. After a bye on Saturday, the Kohawks return to action next Wednesday at Wartburg. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Waverly.
