ONU Defeats ‘Berg Men’s Hoops, 64-55, in Ada

ADA, Ohio—Junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) recorded his fifth double-double of the season, but the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 64-55, tonight in a league game at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio. The loss was the fifth straight for the Student Princes.

Davis tallied 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in 37 minutes of action for Heidelberg (6-16, 4-11 OAC). The Student Princes also received 13 points from junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) on five-of-11 shooting. Sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) added nine points and six rebounds.

ONU (11-11, 7-8 OAC) was led by Scott Schnelle with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Schnelle shot just two-of-seven, but was 14-of-15 from the free throw line. Branden Rushton tallied nine markers of his own.

Following three ties to start the game, ONU scored six straight points to take a 12-6 lead at the 12:55 mark when Taylor Kuhlman made a three-pointer.

Heidelberg then went on an 8-2 run, including a tip-in dunk by Davis, and knotted the score, 14-14, with a pair of free throws by senior guard C.J. Powell (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Foley) at the 9:29 mark.

After another tie at 15-15, the Polar Bears went on a 12-5 jaunt and took a 27-20 advantage with 4:49 on the clock as Rushton made one of two free throws.

A three-pointer by Givner and a jumper by Powell at the 2:20 mark cut the deficit to 27-25, but Rushton and Adam Bair scored on consecutive possession to jump back out to a six-point lead at 31-25, with less than a minute to play in the opening half.

Givner closed the first half for the Berg with a pair of free throws and a jumper to send the Tri-Color into the break looking at a narrow 31-29 deficit.

A jumper in the paint by senior guard Pat Barrett (Lakewood) tied the score 31-31 to open the second half. Four more ties would ensue over the next seven minutes, including 5-0 runs by each team.

After trading leads, the Student Princes went on another 5-0 run to take a 48-44 lead at the 7:31 mark following a pair of free throws by , junior guard Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep).

ONU made four straight free throws—two each by Dominque Royal and Schnelle—to tie the game, 48-48, with 5:47 to play, but a jumper by freshman forward Bryan Crawford (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) at the 4:34 mark tied the game, 50-50, for the 12th and final time.

The Polar Bears outscored the Berg, 14-5, down the stretch to take the victory.

Heidelberg shot 37.3 (19-of-51) percent from the field, including just 21.4 (three-of-14) percent from beyond the arc, but committed just 13 turnovers.

ONU was 41.5 (17-of-41) percent from the field and 79.4 (27-of-34) percent from the charity stripe, making eight more free throws than Heidelberg attempted. ONU also held a 34-30 advantage on the glass.

The Student Princes will close the regular season with a three-game home stand beginning Saturday, Feb. 11 with Marietta College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
