CASTINE, Maine – Carnelius Green (Ovideo, Fla.) scored 21 points, hauled in 14 rebounds, dished out six assists and recorded three steals to lead Green Mountain to a 69-53 win over Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play Saturday afternoon. The Eagles' (4-14, 3-11) victory splits the season series with the Mariners (2-17, 1-12) with each team taking one on their opponents' floor.
Green went to work with a layup off of the opening tip to give his team a 2-0 lead. MMA's Brandon Theriault (East Millinocket, Maine) tied it up at 2-2 on the next possession before a Jack Hepburn (Miller Place, N.Y.) trey, assisted by Green, put Green Mountain out in front for good.
The Mariners were within one, 10-9, six minutes in before Green hit a free throw to start an 8-0 run in which he accounted for half of the points. A Green layup late in the first half made it a double-digit differential, 34-23. Maine Maritime, playing with seven healthy bodies, was not able to cut it back into single digits the rest of the way.
Green was one of four Eagles to finish in double figures. Hepburn and Jakerion Ales (Batesville, Miss.) each posted 12, while Jeremiah Aponte (Copiague, N.Y.) posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. Green Mountain held a 44-24 advantage on the glass.
The Mariners' Andy Ball (Hermon, Maine) led all scorers with 25 points. He also pulled down 12 rebounds. Theriault posted 12 points and six rebounds to go with a pair of assists.
Maine Maritime returns to action next Friday at New England College. Green Mountain will face Castleton next Saturday.
