Payne Scores 14 As B-W Men Defeated Muskingum, 64-44

BEREA, OHIO  –  Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 14 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Muskingum University, 64-44, today (Saturday, February 4 2012) in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. With its win, B-W swept the season series from the Muskies.

With its victory, B-W improves to 13-8 overall and 8-6  in the OAC and has won six of its last eight games. With its loss, Muskingum dropped to 8-13 overall and 5-9 in the OAC and ended a two-game winning streak.


In addition to Payne for B-W, sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) came off the bench to make four three-pointers and score 12 points, sophomore center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) had 11 and sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 10.  Muskingum was led by senior forwards Kyle Clinedinst and Josh Brindley with 14 and 12 points, respectively.


The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 17:39 mark when Payne made a three-pointer. Clinedinst got the Fighting Muskies on the board with a layup at 17:02 to make it 7-2.

Following a layup by sophomore guard Ben Umbel (Poland/Seminary) at 15:41 to make it 7-4, Muskingum scored six straight points and grabbed the lead at 8-7 when Clinedinst made a layup at 13:26.  Following two more lead changes, freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) connected on three straight foul shots at 12:10 to give B-W a 12-10 advantage.

After the game was tied twice, B-W gained a four-point lead at 18-14 at 6:09 when Umbel made a steal, drove the length of the floor and scored. Muskingum responded with an 9-0 run to regain the lead at 23-18 at 1:30 when senior guard J.J. Armstrong heaved a desperation three-pointer when he picked up a loose ball 45-feet from the basket with the time clock running down. B-W received two foul shots from Ferrell at 1:15 to close to 23-20 at the intermission.


In the second half, Umbel made it a 1-point game with a layup at 19:30, but Clinedinst scored at 18:40 and sophomore forward Clay Owings made two foul shots at 17:22 for a 5-point bulge at 27-22. Following a basket by each team, Ferrell and Krakowiak made back-to-back layups to draw B-W to 29-28 with 15:53 left.

Following a Muskie turnover, B-W regained the lead at 30-29 at 15:21 when Payne missed a jumper, grabbed his own rebound and scored. A Krakowiak jumper extended the lead at 14:44, but Brindley countered for the Muskies with a putback and was fouled at 14:09. His missed charity toss left B-W with a 32-31 lead.

A three-pointer by Fairhurst at 12:53 followed by  an Umbel layup at 12:16 pushed B-W's lead to a game-high six points at 37-31. A tip-in by sophomore backup center Aaron Selmek (Delaware/ Columbus DeSales) at 11:03 upped the lead to 39-31 and ran B-W's run to 15-2 since it trailed 29-24 at the 16:52 mark.

A Fairhurst triple at 10:09 ran the run to 10-0 and gave the Yellow Jackets a 42-31 lead. After two Muskie foul shots, Fairhurst had another trey at 9:41,Crowe made a layup at 8:45 and Fairhurst followed with a long triple at 8:10 to make it another 8-0 run and push the lead to 50-33. The Jackets had outscored Muskingum 26-4 since 16:52.

A Clinedinst basket at 7:39 ended B-W's current run and Payne made it 52-35 with a bucket at 6:31 and his three-pointer 41 seconds later made it a 20-point bulge at 55-35. The closest Muskingum would get after that point was 18 points at 62-44 with 1:52 left when backup guard Isaiah Shakespeare made a jump shot.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m. B-W ends its three-game homestand when it hosts Capital University on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:00 p.m.
