WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College jumped out to a 15-2 lead and never looked back, picking up a 77-45 victory over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action Thursday evening at the Bennett Athletic Center.

The Fighting Scots end a seven-game skid with the win, upping their record to 7-13 (6-7 CCC). UNE dips back to 4-16 overall, 4-9 in conference games.

David Dempsey and Park Thomas combined for 27 points for Gordon, connecting on 11-of-18 field goal tries in the contest -- including all four of their long range shots. Dempsey also recorded seven rebounds and three blocks. Alex Carnes and Hans Miersma ended with 10 and eight points, respectively, in support.

For the Nor'easters, junior Nevin Lessard (Belgrade, Maine) tallied a team-high eight points off the bench, with six of those coming at the charity stripe. Three players -- senior Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), first-year Jordan Ferreira (Nantucket, Mass.), and junior Sam Simpson (Eustis, Maine) -- finished with six points apiece.

After Dempsey and Knotek exchanged baskets to begin the match, the hosts ran off 13 unanswered points to go in front, 15-2, 6:31 into the night.

Two three-pointers from Ferreira in a span of 1:42 helped Big Blue reduce the deficit to five (18-13), but a quick seven from Gordon pushed the margin back into double digits (25-13) before the midway point of the first half.

Both squads went rather cold for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes, suffering through two four-minute stretches without any scoring. The Fighting Scots took a 33-19 advantage into the halftime break.

Gordon expanded the difference as play resumed in the second, constructing a 27-point cushion (48-21) by the 13:45 mark, and coasted the rest of the way.

The teams are each back on the hardwood Saturday (3 p.m.), as the Fighting Scots travel to Eastern Nazarene College and UNE entertains Roger Williams University.
