Rangers Fall to Hobart in New Year's Tournament Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. (January 2, 2012) – In the first round of the Sponaugle Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall, Hobart College (7-1) cruised past the Rangers in a 91-62 blowout victory. The loss drops the Rangers to 2-9 on the season and is their seventh in a row.

Four players were in double figures for the Statesmen including the game's leading scorer, Richie Booney, who scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Front-court counterpart Matt Pebole chipped 14 points to lead the Hobart attack.

The Rangers got a career-high from freshman Robby Bier (Milford, Conn./Fairfield Prep) who scored 11 points in 23 minutes on the floor. The first-year guard nailed three 3-pointers and was 4-of-5 from the field. Junior Terrell Brown (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) led the Rangers with 16 points, his eighth-straight game with 14 or more points.

Hobart never trailed in the contest and built an 11-point over the first 20 minutes of action. The real separation in the game occurred in the final period in which the Statesmen stretched their lead to as high as 30 points. A pair of runs in the opening minutes of the second half and the final five minutes sealed the fate of the Rangers. The Statesmen opened the first half with a 9-2 run beginning at the 17 minute mark. Hobart then went on to close the game by scoring 18 of the final 26 points in the contest.

The Rangers committed 17 turnovers on the day compared to just seven by Hobart. The Statesmen also held the edge in rebounds, pulling down 31 compared to 24 by Drew.

Before returning home the Rangers will take on Misericordia tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. Misericordia fell to tournament host, Franklin & Marshall, 68-55 in the nightcap.
