More news about: Centre

Despite all five of its starters scoring in double figures, Centre fell behind early and was never able to catch up, falling 75-66 to Dallas in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action Sunday in  Irving, Tex.

Senior guard Jeff Mullaney (Louisville, Ky.) led the way with 15 points for the Colonels, who saw a four game winning streak come to an end. Josh Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) followed with 12 points while Greg Ross (Cincinnati, Ohio), Bryon Ellis (Russell Springs, Ky.) and Collin Lopez (Louisville, Ky.) all chipped in 10. Ross had a game-high 10 rebounds.

The loss drops Centre to 13-6 on the season and 7-4 in the SCAC while Dallas moves to 6-14 overall and 4-7 in league play.

After two ties and a lead change in the opening minutes, Dallas took the lead for good at the 13:23 mark when Joe Stephens broke a 7-7 tie with back-to-back 3-pointers. Stephens and teammate Tanner Bruffey went on to shoot a combined 7-for-13 from outside and finished with 20 and 21 points respectively.

Centre would battle back to cut the margin to 15-14 on a 3-pointer by Ellis, only to see Dallas answer with a 10-2 run. The Crusaders built the lead to as many as 12 points at 31-19 before taking a 35-29 lead to halftime.

Centre pulled within three points on two occasions in the second half, cutting the lead to 42-39 on a Karsner 3-pointer and later to 54-51 on a Ross free throw, but the Colonels would get no closer. Following the Ross free throw, Dallas put together a 9-2 surge to push the lead back out to double digits with less than four minutes to play.

For the game, Centre outrebounded Dallas 38-32 but turned the ball over 14 times to the Crusaders' 10. Dallas shot 44 percent (23-of-52) to Centre's 40 percent (23-of-58) while both teams were 8-of-20 from outside.

The Colonels return home to host Sewanee at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
