MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange College edged Maryville College 70-67 on Saturday to stay unbeaten in the GSAC. The win was the fourth in a row for the Panthers, now 9-10 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The game was a homecoming for first-year Panther coach Kendal Wallace and assistant coach David McGreal. Both Wallace and McGreal played for longtime Maryville coach Randy Lambert. Wallace was an assistant under Lambert before coming to LaGrange.

The win was the first ever for the Panthers at Maryville. After losing the first 29 games in the series to the Scots, the Panthers have now won two in a row. They defeated the Scots 79-75 in overtime in the GSAC tournament last season.

The win also capped an historic day for the LaGrange basketball teams. Coupled with the women's first ever win against Maryville earlier in the day, it marked the first time the LaGrange teams have swept the Maryville teams.

"What an incredible game. I'm so proud of my guys and the progress they have made as young men this season." Wallace said. " Maryville is a special place and it took every guy on my roster to win here. Things seem to go well when you are surrounded by hard workers and good coaches."

The Panthers placed five players in double figures. Kyron Anderson and Nick Mitchell tied for game honors with 16 points each. Joey Anderkavich, Aaron Power and Marcus Vaughn all had 10 points each. Vaughn also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double in the last four games.

Milton Stanley and Wes Lambert had 14 points each for Maryville (11-8, 2-2 GSAC). Christian Ford and Craig Raye had 11 points each.

The Panthers had their best game at the free throw line, making 22-of-27, for a 81.5 percentage made. Maryville shot only 50 percent from the line, making 12-of-24.

The game was tied eight times and there were 12 lead changes. The Panthers' biggest lead was seven points, while the Scots' had an eight point lead in the first half.

The Panthers trailed 36-28 after a layup by Raye with 1:37 left in the first half. Anderkavich and Anderson each hit a pair of free throws to draw the Panthers within four, 36-32, at the break.

In the second half, the Scots led by four in the early going of the half. Anderson's trey put the Panthers up 47-45 with 12:39 left. The Panthers held on to the lead until Ford's 3-pointer gave the Scots the lead back, 56-54, with 8:48 left.

The lead swapped hands until Anderson scored on a layup for a 68-66 lead with 1:45 left. Stanley made 1-of-2 free throws for the Scots to make it 68-67 with a minute remaining.

After a turnover by the Panthers, Lambert missed a 3-pointer and Anderson came away with the rebound. Raye picked up his fifth foul, sending Power to the free throw line for the first time in the game with 15 seconds left.

Power calmly made both free throws to put the Panthers up 70-67. The freshman has made 19 of his 22 free throw attempts this season.

Maryville got off two 3-point attempts in the closing seconds trying to tie the game. Stanley missed the first and Lambert's attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.
