Spartans Surge Past Green Mountain

POULTNEY, Vt. - Castleton started slow but used a big scoring run to end the first half and then finish with a 93-69 victory over Green Mountain on Tuesday evening in North Atlantic Conference action.

It took the Spartans a while to get in gear, but they eventually found their groove, forcing the Eagles to turn the ball over 33 times and holding the hosts to just 40.9 percent shooting overall and 2-for-9 from behind the arc. Castleton improves to 9-1 in the NAC with the victory and 10-7 overall. The loss drops Green Mountain to 3-11 on the season and just 2-8 in conference play.

The Spartans featured a balanced scoring attack, with four different players reaching double figures. Senior Greg Hughes (West Rutland, Vt.) led the team with 21 points, all off three-pointers, and added seven rebounds while juniors Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, Vt.) and Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) each registered double-doubles. Mustapha had 12 points and grabbed a team-high 13 boards, including seven offensive, and Comstock finished with 14 points and ten rebounds.

Carnelius Green (Oviedo, Fla.) led the Eagles with a game-high 26 points to go along with 16 rebounds and six steals. Jakerion Ales (Batesville, Miss.) and Terry Jones (Pearl, Miss.) also reached double figures with 18 and ten points respectively.

The Spartans grabbed didn't grab their first lead until there was just 6:47 left in the first half, as Chad Pulver (Bennington, Vt.) scored on a layup to make it 29-27. The bucket was part of a larger 24-8 run that the visitors used to finish the half with a 47-35 lead.

Castleton scored the first five points of the second half and Green Mountain only got within ten on one occasion early in the half. The Spartans saw their lead climb as high as 30 with just over four minutes left before finishing with the 24-point win.

Castleton is back in action on Friday when the team hosts Thomas at 7:30 p.m. in Glenbrook Gym.
