DANVILLE, Va. -- Led by double-double nights from Luc Atangana and Nik Biberaj, the Captains surged to a 12th straight victory and 13th in the last 14 games, beating Averett University (6-12, 1-5) on the road, 91-72.  Atangana tied for a game-high 17 points and added 11 rebounds, while Biberaj finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high five assists.

CNU improved to 16-3 overall and 7-0 in the USA South with the win, stretching the longest winning streak since 2002-03 (18 games).

The Captains raced out to a big lead and never let up against the Cougars in the game, powered by a big night from long range. CNU hit 12 three-pointers, a season-high, from five different players including four each from Atangana and rookie Mike Cherry. Cherry hit all four of his in the first half, getting the Captains out to an 18-point lead at the break, 43-25.

CNU hit eight three's in the first half, while the defense held Averett to just eight total made baskets. The Cougars were just 29.6% from the field in the first half, while the Captains forced nine first half turnovers.

In the second half, CNU built the lead to a game-high 29 points with just over ten minutes remaining. Cherry's lone bucket of the second half gave the Captains the 29-point differential, as the rookie finished a game-high tying 17 points. Averett mounted a small 12-4 run to cut the lead back down to 21, as the three-point shots started to fall for the Cougars. The home team knocked down seven three-pointers in the second half, led by three from Jonathan Setters.

With just over seven minutes remaining, though, the Captains bench held the 20+ point lead until the final minute, when free-throws saw it dip to the final 19-point deficit. CNU won, 91-72, with eleven different players in the scoring column.

Cherry and Atangana finished with 17 points, while Biberaj's 14 and senior Conley Taylor's 11 rounded out the double-figure scoring for CNU. Cherry added four assists and four steals. Rookie Adam Otey came off the bench and played 20 minutes, adding season-high's of nine rebounds and seven points.

Left without the services of the league's second-leading scorer, Justin Pierce, due to injury, Averett was led by Marquis Scott with a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Setters added a team-high 15 points, while Grant Chandler chipped in 14.

CNU looks forward now, to a big non-conference battle this Saturday, against fifth-ranked and cross-water rival Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins and Captains will take the matchup to a neutral site at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University at approximately 6:30 pm this Saturday, January 28. The game is part of the Hampton Roads Coaches vs. Cancer Doubleheader and admission is $5, with all proceeds going to cancer research.
