SEWANEE, Tenn. -Southwestern put together a 13-4 second half run cut into Sewanee's lead, but the Tigers made their free throws in the final minute to keep the Pirates from stealing the win.
Southwestern started the game with a big 8-0 run in the opening five minutes, but the Tigers fought back and brought the score even at 20 a piece with four minutes to play in the half. The game remained tight as the half wound to a close and the teams went into the break deadlocked at 27.
After trading jumpers and a three-pointer as the second half got underway Sewanee took a six point lead, 38-32, with two three pointers and sparked a run to go up by 13, 49-36, with 11 minutes to play.
Southwestern regrouped and scored eight unanswered points to pull within five, 49-44 with seven minutes remaining. As the clock wound down Southwestern steadily chipped away at the lead while playing fantastic defense. Demetrice Spearman was fouled on his three point attempt with just over three minutes to go and made the Tigers pay by draining all three to cut the lead to four, 53-49.
Sewanee went up by six after making a layup off an offensive rebound, but SU's James Davenport sank his first three of the season to bring the Pirates within three, 55-52, with 2:10 to go.
The Pirates fouled Lewis Affronti to extend the game, but Affronti made both to move Sewanee to a five point lead. Michael Cantu drove through traffic and hit the layup while being fouled on the next possession. After making the free throw and pulling the Pirates within two, 57-55, Southwestern was forced to foul with just 12 ticks left on the clock. Affronti once again hit both free throws to make it a two possession game, effectively handing the Pirates the 61-55 loss.
SU shot 34.4% from the floor and was led by Logan Hurley's 13 points. Sewanee's Robert Veal led all scorers with 14. Davenport recorded a team high eight rebounds in the loss.
Southwestern comes home to face Millsaps and Rhodes on Friday and Saturday night. Game times are set for 8pm.
