St. Louis, Mo., January 22, 2012 – No. 23 ranked New York University shot a season-high 66 percent from the field and moved into a tie for first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with an 89-75 win at Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon at the WU Field House in St. Louis.
New York (14-1, 4-1 UAA) shot 75 percent (18-24) in the second half and had 26 assists in the win. Kyle Stockmal (24 points), Andy Stein (17 points), Carl Yaffe (15 points) and Ryan Tana (12 points) all scored in double figures for New York, which won its fifth-straight game. The Violets also shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from three-point range and 77.3 percent (17-22) from the foul line.
Washington U. held onto a 7-4 lead early in the contest, but a 17-1 run by the Violets gave them their largest lead of the first half at 21-8 with 12:32 to play. NYU connected on 7-of-9 from the field during the run, and hit three from three-point range.
The Bears would chip away at the double-digit lead following a three-pointer and a steal and lay-up by senior Dylan Richter to make it 21-15 before an NYU timeout. The Violets got an open lay-up by Stein out of the timeout, as NYU began the contest hitting 10-of-14 (71 percent) from the field.
Sophomore Chris Klimek had three-straight buckets to cut the lead down to seven (32-25), but New York made all four of its free-throw attempts in the final 2:09 to take a 38-27 lead at half. New York shot 56.5 percent (12-23) from the field in the opening 20 minutes and hit 8-of-10 from the foul line. Klimek and Richter had eight points apiece in the first half to lead the Bears.
The Bears trimmed the advantage to six (46-40) following a three-pointer by freshman Brayden Teuscher with 15:31 to play. After a timeout by NYU, Carl Yaffe converted a three-point play to get the lead back to nine. The Bears got the lead down to seven following a three-pointer by sophomore Alan Aboona with 13:34 left, but that would be as close as Washington U. would get.
Stockmal sealed the game for New York with a three-pointer and a lay-up in a span of 25 seconds. He scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half.
Richter led the Bears with 18 points on 7-of-23 shooting, while Klimek added 10 points. Sophomore Tim Cooney and Teuscher added nine points apiece in the loss. The Bears shot 41.9 percent (26-62) from the field and had 18 assists.
Washington University (12-4, 4-1 UAA) closes out its four-game homestand against the University of Rochester on Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m., and No. 8 ranked Emory on Sunday, Jan. 29, at Noon.
