Brooklyn, NY- The Men's Basketball team defeated the City College Beavers 77-68 on Friday January 20, 2012 at MEC. The win improves the Cougars record to 11-8 Overall and 2-4 CUNYAC. CCNY falls to 1-16 Overall and 0-5 CUNYAC.
Prior to the contest, the 2010-11 CUNYAC Champions MEC Men's Basketball team was honored with Championship rings.
The Cougars once again played with just 5 players. MEC started off on a 5-2 run. After MEC briefly regained the lead, CCNY took over and led for 13 minutes. MEC would tie the game 3 times during this span. The Cougars grabbed the lead, when Brian Johnson made a layup with 3:18 left in the half. MEC would lead by 4 before CCNY finished the half on a 4-0 run. CCNY led 36-33 at the break. MEC had to keep an eye on Kayode Prime. Prime entered the 2nd half with 3 fouls.
The first 4 minutes, saw the lead swap 3 times. CCNY would then go on 5-3 run spaning 2 minutes. The Cougars would tie the game on a 3pt. shot from Winston Douglas (48-48 with 14:46 left). They would never give up the lead the rest of the game. MEC would increase their lead by 11pts at one point.
In the win, MEC was led by Winston Douglas. Douglas scored 27pts (4-4 FT), grabbed 10 rebounds. This makes him as of 1/20 tied for #1 in the country in Doubles Doubles at 13. Douglas tallied 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Brian Johnson scored a career high 22pts, grabbed 9 rebounds, tallied 2 assists and a steal. Jovan Deare added 19pts, grabbed 7 rebounds, tallied 4 assists and a steal.
CCNY was led by Terence Johnston with 21pts. Israel Vickers scored 17pts, and Matthew Faso added 12pts.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday January 25, 2012, when they travel to Manhattan and battle Baruch College. Game time against the Bearcats will be 7:30pm.
