Vassar Men's Hoops Takes Over Second Half For 73-63 Win Over RIT

ROCHESTER, NY (January 21, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid with a 73-63 win over Rochester Institute of Technology in Liberty League action on Saturday at Clark Gym.

Vassar opened the second half with a 14-4 run to go up 43-33 and maintained its lead throughout, only allowing the Tigers within four points with 1:05 to play. Vassar led by 11 points on three occasions thereafter, keeping the Tigers at bay while hitting 56.5 percent from the floor and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

The Brewers (6-8, 2-3 Liberty) face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on the road on Tuesday, January 24, at 8:00 p.m. The Tigers (6-10, 2-5 Liberty) play Union College on the road on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

Vassar freshman Alex Snyder powered the 14-4 run with seven points while junior David de la Torre keyed the spurt with back-to-back finishes inside for four points.

Sophomore Evan Carberry led the Brewers with 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds, scoring 14 points in the second half and nine in the final four minutes. Carberry put Vassar up 65-56 with 2:18 to play but a five-point RIT run with consecutive layups by Jameel Balenton and a free throw by Desmond Scott brought RIT within four points at 65-61 with 1:05 to play.

On Vassar's next possession, Carberry kept the play alive with two offensive rebounds before finishing with a layup for a 67-61 lead with 47 seconds to play. Vassar clinched the victory with free throws by Carberry and Johnny Mrlik and a layup by Jon Herzog for a 73-61 lead with 15 seconds to play.

Vassar started the game on an 8-0 run but RIT recovered and the close first half featured three lead changes and two ties. Vassar senior Nick Justiz hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie the contest at 29-29.

Herzog tallied 14 points and a game-high six assists for Vassar. Snyder finished with 11 points and six boards.

For RIT, Brendan Harder posted 18 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Justin Heisig tallied 13 points and eight rebounds.
