Falcons Upset No. 11 Stevens Point In Overtime

The men's basketball team snapped a 29-game home winning streak by UW-Stevens Point en route to an 82-75 upset of the No. 11 ranked Pointers in overtime.
 
Stevens Point would jump out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Falcons quickly turned that into a six-point lead of their own.  Stevens Point would lead by as many as seven during the half, but the Falcons would go into the locker room at halftime only trailing the Pointers by three.
 
The second half featured a tough and physical battle, with neither team garnering a lead of more than three for the final 7:33.  But in overtime, it was all Falcons as they converted 10 of 13 free throws to seal the upset.
 
Free throws were key, as UWRF went to the line 33 times, making 28-33 throughout the game for 85 percent.  The Pointers only went 22 times, converting 17-22 for 78 percent.
 
Shane Manor (Altoona, WI, UW-Superior) lit up the scoreboard.  He led all players with 26 points.  He also led UWRF with nine rebounds to finish just shy of a double double.
 
As a team, the Falcons outrebounded UWSP 36-34.  Wade Guerin (Bloomington, MN, St. Croix Lutheran HS) had eight boards and 13 points for a complete performance for UWRF, who is now tied for second place with UWSP with a 7-2 record in the WIAC.
 
Brian Kimble (Stevenson Ranch, CA, Coll. of Canyons JC) added 12 points to aide the Falcons to the series sweep of the Pointers.  On Jan. 4 the Falcons beat the Pointers 73-70 at the Karges Center.
 
Although both teams made 26 shots from the field, UWRF had a much better shooting percentage.  As a team, UWRF was 26-53 for 49.1 percent, whereas UWSP was 26-64 for 40.6 percent.
 
The Pointers did have a slight advantage in three pointers, as they were 6-24 for 25 percent.  UWRF was 2-8, also for 25 percent.
 
With the thrilling victory, the Falcons improve to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in the WIAC.  The Pointers fall to 14-4 overall, and they are also 7-2 in the WIAC.  The Falcons improve the all times series against UWSP to 42-95.
 
Up next for the Falcons is an away contest at UW-Stout.  Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25.  On Dec. 14 the Falcons defeated the Blue Devils 72-52.  They will be looking for their second WIAC series sweep.  UWRF has a 106-82 advantage in the all time series against Stout.
