NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A 36.4 percent (20-of-55) shooting night from the floor hurt the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team (6-8, 3-5 SUNYAC), as the Hawks were dealt a 91-66 setback by The College at Brockport (6-8, 4-3 SUNYAC) on Friday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Hawk Center.

Brockport shot the ball well from the field, knocking down 33-of-61 (54.1 percent) shots. The Golden Eagles also outperformed the Hawks on the boards, holding a 40-26 edge in rebounds. New Paltz's cause was helped by a 76.9 percent (20-of-26) performance at the free-throw line, but Brockport forced the Hawks into 15 turnovers.

Junior forward Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) led all scorers with 27 points, as he went 6-of-17 from the field and 13-of-14 from the charity stripe. He was joined in double figures by senior guard/forward Harris Wichard (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) and junior guard Nick Taldi (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK), who scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Devine, Wichard and Taldi once again accounted for most of the Hawk offense, as they combined for 51 of the team's 66 points. Freshman forward/center Alan Siergiej (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) equaled a career-high in rebounds with eight, while Devine swatted two shots. Wichard's stat line also included three assists.

For Brockport, four players reached double figures. John Ivy led the way with 22 points off 9-of-12 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line. Gerald Williams chipped in with 15 points, while Donnell Jackson and Kyheem Green each pitched in with 12 apiece. Dorian Hayden came off the bench to lead the Golden Eagles in rebounds, grabbing seven in just 16 minutes of action. Derek Klein dished out a game-high six assists, while Green posted a game-high three blocks.

New Paltz held the momentum for the first five minutes of the contest, as it went on a 6-0 run to obtain its largest lead of the night, and a three-pointer by Wichard made the score 12-6 at 15:25 of the first half. Brockport, however, went on an 11-0 run, during which Williams scored seven points, to push to score to 17-12 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Taldi cut the deficit to two with a three-pointer, but Brockport countered with a 5-0 spurt.

The Golden Eagles continued to build on their lead in the final 10 minutes of the first half, and a play that happened with 21 seconds to go in the period changed the course of the game. With an opportunity to cut the deficit to single digits, New Paltz was done in by strong defense in the backcourt by Jackson, as he did not allow Wichard to cross the half-court line with the ball. Jackson forced a steal and then went uncontested on a fastbreak, throwing down a dunk with 19 seconds remaining in the stanza. Wichard was unable to convert on a trey with five ticks left in the half, and Brockport took a 42-29 advantage into the halftime intermission.

A Jackson free throw at 19:35 of the second half opened up the final 20 minutes of play, but the Hawks trimmed the lead to single digits with a 5-0 run, and a Devine layup brought New Paltz within nine at 43-34. Just more than two minutes later, Taldi brought the deficit down to nine once again with a pair of made free throws, but Brockport went on a 16-4 run that ultimately put the Hawks away for good.

New Paltz looks to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon, as it hosts SUNY Geneseo at 4 p.m. in a league contest.
