GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College sophomore forward Richie Bonney scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Statesmen to a 72-40 Liberty League victory over Vassar College tonight. The front-running Statesmen improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in conference while the Brewers slipped to 5-8, 1-3.
During the first 10 minutes of the game, neither team was able to get into a flow with Vassar holding a 12-10 lead halfway through the stanza. At that point, Hobart found another gear, closing the half on a 20-5 run that featured a fast break dunk by Bonney.
In the first half, the Statesmen dominated in the paint 16-8 (40-20 overall), off turnovers 13-0 (30-9), on second chances 6-2 (10-6), and on the fast break 4-0 (14-0).
Hobart started the second half on a 9-2 run that Bonney closed out with a traditional 3-point play, throwing down another dunk and making the free throw to inflate the lead to 20. The Statesmen kept their lead between 18 and 34 down the stretch.
Senior forward Matt Pebole added 12 points and eight rebounds for Hobart. Ten of the 11 Statesmen to play in the game made at least one field goal, shooting 47.1 percent from the floor.
Alex Snyder had a team-high eight points off the bench for Vassar. The Brewers shot just 29.8 percent from the floor, but did connect on 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Hobart returns to the court at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Statesmen host Bard. Vassar will travel to RIT and play tomorrow at 4 p.m.
