Buzzer-beater tops Tommies on home floor

More news about: St. Thomas

Bethel's Kellan Dahlquist rebounded a missed 3-pointer and laid in the game-winning basketball at the buzzer as the visiting Royals (7-7 overall, 3-6 MIAC) rallied to beat the host Tommies (10-4, 7-2), 69-68, in MIAC men's basketball play Monday night in Schoenecker Arena.

Bethel ended a 16-game losing streak to St. Thomas. UST came into the game having won 61 of its last on-campus MIAC games since January 2006.

The Tommies went ahead 68-67 with 47 seconds left on Will DeBerg's free throw. He missed the second try but Noah Kaiser rebounded for UST.

A Tommie turnover with 18 seconds under the basket left gave BU a chance to win. Daniel Baah's 3-point shot with :04 left missed long, but Dahlquist got the rebound and banked in the winner just ahead of the horn.

DeBerg had a game-high 22 points and Conner Nord had eight points and eight rebounds for UST, which shot just 39% from the floor.

Taylor Hall had 18 points to lead the Royals, who ended a four-game losing streak. Bethel sank 6-of-9 from 3-point range in the second half to rally from a 33-26 halftime deficit.

Fiev teams are now within one game in the MIAC race -- UST, Augsburg and Gustavus are tied at 7-3, with St. Olaf and Hamline next at 6-3.

Both UST conference losses came in games where it led in the final 30 seconds.

The Tommies play Wednesday at St. Olaf and Saturday at St. Mary's.
