LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team recorded a 74-54 win over Dominican on Tuesday night, turning in one of its top performances of the season.
Benedictine put together a strong first half, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and never trailing. The Eagles needed just over seven minutes to build a double digit lead at 19-9 on a Nate Green layup. Dominican embarked on a 9-1 run to whittle a 15-pont deficit down to seven when Matt Kuzniar hit a three. With 1:49 left in the opening half, DeAnthony Moore split a pair of free throws to bring the guests within 31-25. Benedictine scored the final six points of the half capped by a three-pointer from Michael Woolf just before the halftime buzzer to lead 37-25 at the intermission.
Dominican scored the first five points of the second half to pull within 37-30, but a 6-0 run quickly turned the tide when Tim McGinty finished a three-point play with 16:36 remaining. The visitors were only able to bring the deficit under double digits once the rest of the way. Alex Edmondson ignited a 9-0 run with a three-pointer with 11:40 left, and McGinty finished the run with a layup to make the score 57-38 with 7:39 to go. The lead reached as large as 22 points in the final moments of the contest.
Benedictine shot 51.7 percent for the contest. Nate Green led the way with 21 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Jamison Montgomery netted 16 with McGinty totaling 11. Darrius Nelson led Dominican with 16 points.
The Eagles (5-10, 4-4) are back at the .500 mark in the Northern Athletics Conference. Aurora University visits the Rice Center on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
