ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth scored 58 points in the first half for the second time in 10 days as the Golden Flyers dominated visiting Elmira 89-36 in a men's Empire 8 conference basketball game Saturday afternoon. Nazareth also scored 58 points in the first half against Cortland on January 4th. All 11 Golden Flyers who appeared in the game scored for Nazareth's offense.
With the victory, the Golden Flyers improve to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference games. Elmira falls to 0-14 overall and 0-4 in Empire 8 contests. Following the win, Nazareth has won five of its last six games. The Golden Flyers have yet to lose at the Kidera Gymnasium, improving to 6-0 at home. Nazareth travels to Stevens and Hartwick for a pair of conference games next Friday and Saturday before returning home to face St. John Fisher on January 24th.
Senior Tyshun Stephens had 15 points and sophomore Brad Ford recorded 11 points in the first half to ignite the Golden Flyers' offense. Nazareth finished a torrid 21-37 (57 percent) on their field goal attempts, including 8-12 (67 percent) from beyond the arc to build its initial lead.
The Golden Flyers scored the first eight points of the ball game in the opening 1:26 to take control of the contest. The Golden Flyers tied together several multiple basket scoring runs to quickly extend their lead into double figures. Stephens connected on a three-point shot in the final seconds of the half to provide Nazareth a 58-34 lead at the break.
Despite the Golden Flyers' enormous lead, the Soaring Eagles finished a respectable 11-24 (46 percent) on their field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes. Nazareth's 22-9 advantage in rebounds helped extend the Golden Flyers' lead. The Golden Flyers' defense, meanwhile, held Elmira's offense to just 2-24 (8 percent) from the field in the second half.
Nazareth's offense continued to click in the second period as the Golden Flyers stretched their lead with a 9-0 scoring run in the first 3:30. Nazareth continued to make their shots to build their lead while the Golden Flyers' defense shut down the Soaring Eagles' offense. Nazareth held Elmira scoreless for the final 4:30 of regulation and without a field goal for the final 5:59. Junior Dan Waldbillig's basket in the final minute provided Nazareth with its largest lead of the game and the 53-point victory.
Four Golden Flyers finished in double figures led by Stephens with 19 points. Ford finished with 16 points while senior Greg Lothridge and sophomore Scott Hayford tallied 12 points apiece. Hayford's 12 points set a new career high. Lothridge collected a game-high 10 rebounds to help Nazareth finish with a 39-28 advantage in total rebounds. Stephens amassed eight assists in addition to his game-high point total.
Dan O'Brien recorded a team-high 15 points in 21 minutes for Elmira. David Borelli had a team-high seven rebounds in 10 minutes of action.
