SAGEHENS STAY PERFECT IN SCIAC WITH 71-47 WIN OVER CALTECH

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman forward Jack Klukas (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had 19 points on 8-11 shooting and sophomore forward Jake Klewer (Tucson, Ariz.) had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Pomona-Pitzer to a 71-47 win over Caltech on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-5 overall and remain unbeaten in the SCIAC at 3-0, heading into a Wednesday night home game with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which improved to 13-0 and 3-0 in the SCIAC with a 76-67 win over Redlands on Saturday. Caltech slips to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Senior guard Evan Zahniser (Mercer Island, Wash.) put the Sagehens ahead 21-9 early with a driving lay-up, but the Beavers were able to hang tough for most of the first half. A three-pointer from Mike Paluchniak made it 28-20 with 3:31 left, but Klukas assisted on a Klewer lay-up with 45 seconds left, and after a stop, Klukas buried a three-pointer to put the Sagehens ahead 40-26 heading into the break.

After a foul shot made the score 40-27, Klukas hit a short jumper and buried a three-pointer to stretch the lead up to 45-27, and Caltech wasn't able to threaten the rest of the way.

Junior forward Po Grant (Brookline, Mass.) was also in double figures for the Sagehens with 10 points off the bench. Zahniser had nine points on 4-4 shooting from the floor, while Klewer's 10 rebounds helped the Sagehens to a 41-18 advantage in that department for the game.

Andrew Hogue was the only Beaver in double figures, as he finished with 11 points on 4-9 shooting. Pomona-Pitzer shot over 50 percent in both halves, finishing 56.3 percent for the game (27-48) from the floor.

Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will wage the first half of their neighborhood rivalry on Wednesday at Voelkel Gymnasium (7:30 p.m.) with an early hold on first place in the SCIAC on the line. The Stags come in ranked 17th in the nation in Division III with its perfect record on the year.
