New Rochelle, NY- The Medgar Evers Cougars defeated Lehman College Lightning 70-58 on Saturday January 15, 2012. The game was played at New Roc City in New Rochelle, because Lehman College's Gym (APEX) is recovering from water damage caused by Hurricane Irene. The Cougars improved to 10-7 Overall and 1-3 CUNYAC while the Lightning dropped to 8-8 Overall and 4-1 CUNYAC.
Lehman led for just about the opening 2 minutes. After a layup by Frehman Brian Johnson cut the lead to 1, Jovan Deare hit a jumper, giving the Cougars a 4-3 lead with 18:02 left in the half. The rest of the half, was all MEC. MEC led by as much as 11pts. Lehman cut the lead to 1pt couldn't take over the lead.
In the 2nd half, MEC lead the entire way. The Cougars outscored Lehman 37-26 and built a 17pt lead at one point in the half. The Cougars outshot Lehman in all 3 categories (FG, 3pt range, FT).
For the Cougars, Winston Douglas led with a game high 31pts (9-12 FG, 5-7 3pt range, 8-11 FT), grabbed 14 rebounds, tallied an assist, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Jovan Deare scored 20pts. The Junior recorded 3 assists and 4 steals. Deare is 17pts away from 1,000pts. Freshman Brian Johnson scored 10pts and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Lehman was led from Mathias Raggiotto, who scored 17pts. Kelvin Gil scored 13pts and Sebastian Pessoa added 10pts.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday January 18, 2012, when they take on Hunter College Hawks at Hunter College. Game time is 7pm.
