Lightning Men Handed First Conference Loss by Medgar Evers

More news about: Lehman

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - In a rematch of last season's CUNYAC Championship quarterfinal, the Lehman Lightning once again had no answer for Medgar Evers forward Winston Douglas as the Cougars took control in the second half to capture a 70-58 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex at New Roc City.

Douglas was outstanding from the start, tallying 16 first half points on his way to a game high of 31.  The 6-4 junior also grabbed 14 boards and showed off an improved outside stroke as he knocked down 5-of-7 three-pointers.

His three-point proficiency was on full display through the first part of the first half as Medgar built an 11 point lead behind four Douglas trifectas.  Two free throws by the Long Island native gave the Cougars a 24-13 lead with 7:46 on the clock.

The Lightning would battle back, however, as Quaseem Weems came off the bench to spark Lehman with some long distance shooting of his own.  Upon entering the game, Weems canned three three-pointers over a two minute span to breath life into the Lightning attack.

With Medgar leading 30-22, Lehman drew to within one point after three straight successful trips downcourt.  First, Kelvin Gil tossed in a layup; he then banged home a three-pointer, followed by two free throws from Mathias Raggiotto.

Medgar received baskets from Kayode Prime and Brian Johnson before a jumper and two free throws by Raggiotto closed out the scoring in the first half with Lehman down 33-32.

Over the first three minutes of the second half the Cougars managed to increase their lead to seven, 41-34.  But once again the Lightning responded.

Raggiotto dropped in a basket from close range followed by Gil's second three-pointer of the game and the Lightning was back within two points at 41-39.

His team clinging to a 44-41 lead, Douglas reasserted himself, particularly on the offensive glass, and scored five straight Cougars' points to give the visitors some breathing room.  Second-leading scorer Jovan Deare came alive as well, scoring nine points down the stretch to help Medgar pull away.  Douglas' fifth and final three-pointer of the afternoon with 3:09 remaining boosted the Cougars' lead to 17 points.

Lehman was led in defeat by Raggiotto's 17 points while Gil added 13.  Junior Sebastian Pessoa contributed a strong game with 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Following the game, Raggiotto was presented with a commemorative award for his play during the contest in honor of the late Lightning coach Ed Kramer.

The Lightning is back in action Wednesday, January 18 when the team hosts Brooklyn College at Borough of Manhattan Community College.
