ALLIANCE, Ohio—Jimmy Wood poured in a game-high 18 points on a seven-of-15 shooting performance to lead the University of Mount Union past the Heidelberg University men's basketball team, 67-49, today in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance, Ohio. Junior forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) led the Student Princes with 10 points.

In addition to Fortkamp, for the 'Berg (5-10, 3-5 OAC), junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) had nine points and junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) tallied eight points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

In addition to Wood for Mount Union (7-8, 3-5 OAC), T.J. Gillespie scored 11 points and Justen Little added 10 points and matched a game-high with six rebounds.

The Student Princes opened the game with a 3-0 lead following a lay-up by Davis and free throw by Fortkamp at the 17:15 mark.

After a change of possessions, the Purple Raiders to a 4-3 lead when Little made a lay-up and extended their lead to 9-5 with 14:10 on the clock as Gillespie made a three-pointer.

The Berg went on a 5-0 jaunt to take a 10-9 lead at 11:45 following another lay-up by Davis and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft), but it would be the last lead the Tri-Color enjoyed for the rest of the game.

Mount Union made a 19-11 charge to take its largest lead of the first half at 29-20 when Wood canned a triple at the 1:55 mark.

A trey by sophomore guard Lee Renner (Gibsonburg) with less than minute to play in the opening half sent Heidelberg into the intermission looking at a 31-23 deficit.

The Purple Raiders immediately took a double-digit lead in the second half as Wood made a jumper at 19:02 to give Mount Union a 33-23 advantage.

Heidelberg closed to within seven points, but Mount Union went on a 6-0 jaunt, taking a 41-28 lead with 14:53 to play when Matt Wier made one of two free throws.

The Raiders built a second-half lead as large as 21 points at 58-37 with 6:34 to play following a lay-up by Gillespie and would coast to the victory.

The Student Princes shot just 33.0 percent (17-of-51) from the field, including 27.6 percent (eight-of-29) in the second half, and was 45.0 percent (nine-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Mount Union shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field, including 56.5 percent (13-of-23) after the break, and converted 84.6 percent (11-of-13) of their free-throw attempts. The Purple Raiders also held a 36-34 rebounding advantage.

The Berg will close its four-game road swing Wednesday, Jan. 18 at John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m.
