Brooklyn Too Tough For Visiting Hunter; Win Conference Matchup 77-64

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team defeated conference rival Hunter College, 77-64, on Saturday afternoon at the West Quad Center. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 10-3 overall on the season and 3-1 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference, while the Hawks fall to 6-8 overall on the year and 2-2 in league play.

The win also moves BC to 6-0 at the West Quad Center this season.

The Bulldogs were led by their senior laden backcourt of Amil John and Tyshawn Russell, as John netted a game-high 26 points to go along with nine rebounds and three steals; while Russell added 20 points.

Junior Filipp Bochkov chipped in with 13 points and three steals, while classmate Kavon Baker finished the afternoon with nine points, seven assists and three steals. Keiran Halton also recorded nine points and three steals, to go with six rebounds.

Hunter was led by Mark Courtien, who dropped a team-high 22 points, while converting on 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. Jeffrey Daza added 12 points, while Panagio Koutsoloukas chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Down by six, 10-4, with 16:20 left in the opening half, the Hawks used a 9-0 run powered by three straight three-pointers from Courtien, to take a 13-10 lead at the 14:48 mark of the half.

The Hunter lead would not last long however, as Brooklyn would regroup quickly and take control of the game utilizing a 19-0 run, to take a 16-point advantage, 29-13, with 7:42 remaining before the halftime break. Five Bulldogs contributed to the run, led by Russell's seven points.

Still trailing by 16, 38-22, with just 1:11 left in the period, the Hawks closed out the half on a 6-0 run to head into the locker room down by 10, 38-28.

Hunter would continue to cut into their deficit in the second half and eventually tie the game for the third time on the day at 55-55 with 6:00 left before the final buzzer on a jumper from Koutsoloukas.

Brooklyn would not allow Hunter to take the lead, as the Bulldogs rebuilt their advantage back to double digits on a 14-4 run, to take a 69-59 lead with just 1:32 remaining in the game. John led BC's offensive surge scoring six of the 14 points.

The Bulldogs would lead by double figures the rest of the way en route to their 77-64 win.

For the game, Hunter shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field, including 42.1% (8-19) from three. The Hawks also shot 57.1% (8-14) from the free throw line.

Brooklyn shot 39.7% (25-63) from the field, while going 33.3% (7-21) from beyond the arc. BC took full advantage from the line going 20-for-26 (76.9%) from the charity stripe.

The Hawks held the rebounding edge 43-32; however, the Bulldogs defense was stellar once again forcing Hunter into 28 turnovers, while committing just 12 turnovers of their own. Brooklyn also registered 15 steals on the day.

BC will continue its CUNYAC slate on Wednesday, January 18th, as the Bulldogs will hit the road to take on the Lightning of Lehman College at 7:00 pm. The game is scheduled to be played at the Borough of Manhattan Community College due to court damage at Lehman.
