Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team earned a non-conference victory over visiting borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 74-68, on Wednesday night. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 9-3 overall on the season, while the Bears fall to 7-8 overall on the year.
Junior forward Kavon Baker led BC with 21 points and eight rebounds, helping his squad get back to their winning ways after a road loss at Staten Island on Saturday. Baker shot 8-of-13 from the field, including 1-2 from three and 4-7 from the free throw line.
Senior guard Tyshawn Russell added 20 points, five assists and four steals, while junior forward Keiran Halton finished the night with a career-high 15 points, to go along with seven rebounds. Senior guard Amil John netted 12 points to go with four steals. Junior forward Steven Grant contributed with six points and six rebounds coming off the bench.
The Bears were led by David Louison, who led all scorers with 24 points. Louison also grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds to record the double-double. Vernon Maddox chipped in with 11 points coming off the bench.
The first half featured a tight contest as the game was tied on six different occasions. Brooklyn would lead by as many as five, while St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) would only lead by as many as two. The Bulldogs would take a slim 36-34 lead in the halftime break.
BC would begin to take control of the game in the second half, as the Bulldogs used a 9-2 run to take a 45-36 advantage at the 16:53 mark of the second stanza. Brooklyn would eventually build their lead to double figures on a key three-pointer from Baker to push the BC advantage to 54-44 at the 11:06 mark.
The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 15, 70-55, with 2:17 left in the game on a free throw from John; however, the Bears would not go down without a fight as St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) began to chip away at their deficit. In the end, the Brooklyn lead would be too much for the Bears to overcome, as BC would take the hard fought victory, 74-68.
For the game, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) shot 40.0% (26-65) from the field, while connecting on just 21.1% (4-19) from three. The Bears also shot 75.0% (12-16) from the free throw line.
Brooklyn shot 48.1% (25-52) from the field and 33.3% (2-6) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs took full advantage of the charity stripe converting 22-of-37 (59.5%).
The Bears held the rebounding edge 42-34, while the stingy Brooklyn defense, which is currently third in the nation in both steals and turnover margin, forced St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) into 24 turnovers, while racking up 15 steals. The Bulldogs committed 19 turnovers.
Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, January 14th, as the Bulldogs will play host to City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival Hunter College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm at the West Quad Center.
