CASTINE, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington's 12-0 run out of intermission helped the Beavers grab a 62-49 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action this evening at Smith Gymnasium.
Winners of five straight, the Beavers (7-4 overall) upped their unblemish NAC record to 7-0. UMF is scheduled to visit Thomas College in NAC action Saturday at 1 p.m. The Mariners slipped to 2-10 (1-5).
Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) knocked down five 3-pointers for 15 points to lead the Beavers, while Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) pitched in 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting from 3-point range and eight rebounds. Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) hit three 3-pointers in the win for nine points with Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) providing eight points and Tim Gingras (Winthrop, Maine) five points and six rebounds.
MMA held a 32-31 lead at halftime, but the Beavers scored 12 points over the first 4:55 of the second half to distance themselves from the Mariners.
The Mariners' Tyler Pineo tallied 16 points to lead all scorers. Pineo made four threes. Andy Ball with 14 points and Ben Russell with 10 points also reached double digits for MMA, while Shawn Dostie supplied eight points and swatted five shots.
The Beavers led 20-11 on a Sumner three with 8:51 left in the first half, but the Mariners outscored UMF 12-3 over the next 4:40 with a Dostie basket tying the game at 23-23. MMA took the lead on a Pineo 3-pointer at 26-23 and took a 32-31 edge at the break.
Iman kicked off the 12-0 run with a layup followed by a Sumner triple, five points from Johnson and a Gingras putback to put the Beavers into a 43-32 lead with 15:05 left to play.
Dickey hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to push UMF into a 52-37 advantage with 10:45 remaining in the game. After a Gingras free throw, which completed a 21-5 span, the Beavers led by 16 points, but the Mariners were able to chisel the deficit down to 56-47 on a pair of Pineo threes with four minutes to play. Iman scored six points down the stretch and UMF held MMA to a single field goal as the Beavers remained unbeaten in the NAC with a 62-49 win.
