Wesley Men’s Hoops Runs All Over Stevenson

DOVER, Del. – A season-high 22 points by Darrell Johnson and a well-rounded team effort helped Wesley College's men's basketball team run away from Capital Athletic Conference rival Stevenson University, 78-48, Monday night at Wentworth Gymnasium.  The win gives the Wolverines a 5-9 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the CAC.  The Mustangs fall to 3-10 and 0-4 in the CAC.

 

Johnson led all scorers on 7-of-15 shooting with three buckets from behind the arc while JJ Bryant added 13 points off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting.  Paul Reynolds also scored in double figures with ten points and tied for a game-high seven rebounds with teammates David 'Big Country' Langan and Sean McAndrew

 

Sean Hopkins also added a spark off the bench with Chris Douglas in foul trouble and dished out a game-high four assists and four steals in just 11 minutes.

 

Wesley shot 43.1% from the field on 28-of-65 shooting and 20 of their field goals were assisted.  The Wolverines recorded more assists than the Mustangs had field goals (16).  The Navy & White also committed a season-low eight turnovers and forced 23, leading to 33 points.

 

The contest was close early on as foul trouble forced Wesley to go to the bench early.  The Wolverines' largest lead in the first half came with 6:17 left as Hopkins found McAndrew wide open underneath, giving Wesley a 24-15 lead.

 

After the Navy & White scored the second half's first eight points, Stevenson came right back to cut Wesley's lead to 36-30 with 17:25 remaining in regulation.  From there it was all Wolverines, as Wesley went on a 16-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 52-32 lead at the ten minute mark.

 

Stevenson answered with a three on their following possession but Wesley went on another long run, pushing the lead to as high 75-41 after five straight points by Nick Guidry.

 

Wesley is back in action Wednesday night when the host its arch-nemesis Salisbury University in an 8 pm conference matchup.
