St. Mary's gains first win; tops Macalester

Macalester  turned the ball over 21 times and lost to St. Mary's 62-47 Saturday at the Leonard Center.  The Scots made 21 free throws, but took just 30 shots, compared to 53 for the Cardinals.

 

The Cardinals grabbed their first lead at the 7:32 mark of the opening period at 15-14 as both teams started slowly on offense.  The score was tied 17-17 with 5:56 to go before St. Mary's began a key 15-6 run to open up a 32-23 advantage at the break.  SMU out-scored Mac 30-24 in the second half.  The Cardinals led 44-36 midway through the second half and 49-40 with 8:57 left, and then put things way with 11 unanswered points.

 

Macalester was led by Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) with 18 points and seven rebounds.  Peters went 8-for-8 from the free throw line to boost his percentage on the season to .902 (55-for-61) and came within a couple points of his fifth straight 20-point effort.  Sam Marshall (So., Sun Prairie, Wis.) added seven points, but played just 15 minutes due to foul trouble.

 

Leading the way for the Cards was Pat Freeman with 23 points.  He was 7-for-12 from the field and 7-for-10 from the line.  Michael Burfeind, who is second in the MIAC in scoring, added 14 points and three assists, and Evan Peterson had four assists.

 

The Scots drop their second straight game and fall to 1-11 overall, 1-6 in the MIAC.  SMU collects its first win, and moves to 1-10 on the season and 1-5 in the MIAC.

 

Macalester is off until next Saturday (Jan. 13) when they host Gustavus at 3 p.m.
