Emory's Davis Tips in Winner as Eagles Nip Rochester, 83-81

ATLANTA, Ga – Emory University's Jake Davis tipped in a missed three-pointer just before the final buzzer to give the fifth-ranked Eagles an 83-81 victory over the University of Rochester at the Woodruff PE Center on Saturday afternoon.

Davis finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for Emory (12-0, 1-0 University Athletic Association). Rochester is 9-3, 0-1 UAA.

Austin Claunch of Emory led all scorers with 27 points and added eight assists. Justin Resnick was the third Emory player in double figures. He scored 11 points.Rochester's Rob Reid scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Nate Novosel had 16 points and four rebounds. John DiBartolomeo had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Nate Vernon scored 11 points.

The Yellowjackets had just tied the game for the second time in the last two minutes on a Reid putback with 32 seconds to play. Rochester trailed by four, 81-77, after Alex Gulotta sank a three-pointer with 1:51 left. DiBartolomeo missed a trey for Rochester, but Reid tipped in the rebound with 1:28 to go, pulling Rochester within 81-79.

Emory turned the ball over with 52 seconds remaining. Vernon missed a three-pointer but Reid was there for the rebound layup with 32 seconds on the clock.

After two fouls by Rochester, Emory called time with 5.9 seconds remaining. The ball was inbounded to Claunch. He missed a long three, but Davis was there for the finish.

Emory roared to a 19-point lead in the first half and was up 10, 38-28, at halftime. Rochester regrouped, methodically cut into the lead, and eventually edged ahead by four, 63-59, on Kevin Sheehy's trey with 8:35 to go.

In a pre-season poll of the UAA head coaches, Emory and Rochester tied for first place. Rochester won the UAA title last year with a 12-2 record, just ahead of Emory's 11-3. The teams swapped home court victories. The return game this year is in Rochester on February 25.
