CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Simpson men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Coe team Wednesday night, falling 90-75.
The Kohawks (8-5, 2-2 Iowa Conference) shot better than 61 percent from the field and hit 13 of 22 3-pointers.
Zack Barragan (Ankeny, Iowa) scored a game-high 20 points and went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc for the Storm (4-8, 1-3 Iowa Conference), but couldn't stop the outside shooting of Coe.
David Mataloni scored a team-high 18 points and Andrew Wirth scored 17 with five 3-pointers for Coe.
Coe controlled the first half and led 46-36 at halftime after Chad Boston (Des Moines, Iowa) got whistled for a technical foul after pulling himself up on the rim on a follow-up dunk in the final seconds of the half.
Simpson cut the lead to seven early in the second half before a 9-0 Coe run pushed the lead to 16, 57-41. Three-straight 3-pointers by Drew Bentley (Burlington, Iowa) trimmed the deficit to nine but Coe responded with an 18-3 run that put the game away.
Simpson returns home Saturday when it hosts Dubuque in a 4 p.m. tipoff at Cowles Fieldhouse. Saturday is Simpson's Community Appreciation Day, as all attendees will receive free admission to the doubleheader. The women's game tips off at 2 p.m.
