CORTLAND, N.Y. – Jason Corletta (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) scored 22 points and Brad Ford (Victor) recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds as Nazareth College defeated SUNY Cortland, 87-56, in a non-league contest.
Nazareth (6-4) dominated the opening 20 minutes and led 58-21 at halftime. The Golden Flyers finished the game 14-of-21 from three-point range, including 10-of-13 (77 percent) in the opening half. Nazareth shot 65 percent from the field in the first half and 57 percent (32-of-56) for the game.
Corletta made 9-of-13 shots, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line, and Ford hit 5-of-6 three-pointers and 8-of-12 field goal attempts overall. Tyshun Stephens (Newark) chipped in with 19 points and a game-high five assists. Corletta scored 16 points, Stephens netted 14 and Ford scored 13 points in the first half.
Junior Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) led Cortland (8-3) with 12 points. He hit 3-of-4 shots from three-point range. Junior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) added eight points and junior Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville) blocked four shots.
Cortland made 7-of-20 three-pointers, but was 0-for-8 from the arc in the first half. The Red Dragons were within 10-8 four minutes into the game, but the Golden Flyers scored 22 of the next 26 points to take a 32-12 lead with 10:52 left. The Nazareth lead grew as high as 38 points at 58-20 with 58 seconds remaining in the half.
Cortland closed the deficit to 24 points twice in the second half, the last time at 78-54 on a Nick Sutedjo (Webster/Webster Schroeder) three-pointer with 4:09 left.
Cortland will host Geneseo in a SUNYAC contest Saturday at 6 p.m. Nazareth travels to Utica College Friday at 8 p.m. and Ithaca Saturday at 4 p.m.
