B-W Men Fall to Cross-Town Rival John Carroll, 89-85, in University Hts.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO  – Junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/Walsh Jesuit) scored 14 points but the Baldwin-Wallace men's basketball team fell to Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll, 89-85, tonight (Wednesday, January 4, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Don Shula Sports Center. 

B-W falls to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the OAC and JCU improves to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.

In addition to Ameen for B-W, sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) tallied 13 points  and freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) added 12. The Blue Streaks were led by senior forward Patrick Sweeney scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior guard Corey Shontz had 12 points, senior forward Kyle Hubbard added 11 and seniors Mark Hester and Michael Hartnett contributed 10.  

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 mark as sophomore forward Tyler Farrell (Brunswick) scored on a jumper at 19:28 and then canned a three-pointer at 19:05. The Blue Streaks got on the board at the 18:23 mark when Shontz made a jumper to cut the deficit to 5-2. B-W then outscored JCU 10-8 to build its lead to 15-10 at the 15:20 mark when Ameen made a long three-pointer. The lead grew to 10 points at 21-11 at the 13:34 mark when senior All-OAC point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria) scored on a layup.


JCU finally ended the B-W run when senior guard Conor Sweeney made a jumper at 12:19 to cut the lead to 21-13, but Ameen came right back and countered with a layup at 12:08 to push it back to 10 points at 23-13.  JCU sophomore guard Ryan Angers made one of two foul shots at 11:41 and Shontz added a jumper at 11:02 to cut the lead to 23-16, but B-W Crowe canned a triple at 10:40 to put the lead right back at 10 points at 26-16.


Following a basket by each team and a JCU foul shot, Crowe canned another trey at 9:17 for the Yellow Jackets to push the advantage to 12 points at 31-19. Then Shontz was called for a technical foul at the 9:09 mark and Krakowiak canned both foul shots to push the lead to 33-19. The lead then grew to 34-19 when junior forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) made one of two foul shots. The eight-point B-W run ended when JCU's Patrick Sweeney made a layup at 8:34 to make it 34-21. A Jeff Chahine foul shot at 8:12 cut the lead to 34-22.


Following a Cabbil drive and layup off of a fastbreak at 7:40, JCU's Angers made one of two foul shots at 6:46 to make it 36-23 and then Hubbard scored at 5:44 to cut the lead to 36-25. But Krakowiak pushed the lead back to 14 at 39-25 when he canned a triple at 5:18. Again Angers cut the B-W lead when he made two foul shots at 4:41 for a 39-27 lead. Then Ameen gave B-W its largest lead at 15 points at 42-27 when he canned a three-pointer at 4:30, and junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) pushed it to 17 points at 44-27 at 3:36 when he made a pair of charity tosses.


A JCU hoop by Conor Sweeney at 3:23 cut the lead to 44-29 but Ameen for B-W pushed it back to 17 at 46-29 at 2:34 when he made a pair of foul shots. Patrick Sweeney then cut the lead to 15 at 46-31 at 2:06 when he made two foul shots, but B-W sophomore forward Skyler Simpson (Centerburg) canned a three-pointer to push the lead to a high of 18 points at 49-31 at 1:28.  JCU ended the half on a four-point run and B-W led 49-35 at the intermission.


In the second half, Harnett cut the lead to 11 points at the 19:50 mark when he canned a three-pointer. Payne countered for B-W by making two foul shots at 19:36 to make it 51-38 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. The Blue Streaks then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 51-44 at the 17:42 mark when Harnett made a layup. B-W's Krakowiak ended the run with a long jumper at 17:23 to make it 53-44.


Hubbard again brought JCU to within seven points at 53-46 with a pair of foul shots at 16:31, but Ameen pushed the lead back to nine points at 55-46 when he scored, was fouled but missed his free throw at 15:46. Angers again made it seven at 55-48 at 15:28 when he made a jumper and was fouled. His made three throw cut B-W's advantage to six at 55-49. A Chahine jumper at 14:21, a layup by Patrick Sweeney at 13:50 and a pair of free throws by Hester tied it at 55-55 with 12:50 left.


B-W sophomore center Aaron Selmek ended the nine-point JCU run and gave the lead back to B-W when he made a jumper at 12:32 and Cabbil pushed it back to four points at 59-55 at 12:00 with a jumper. Hester made it a two-point game again when he missed a jumper, grabbed the rebound and scored at 11:18. Patrick Sweeney tied the game at 59-59 when he made two charity tosses at 10:25.


Krakowiak put B-W back on top at 62-59 when he canned a trey at 10:12, but Patrick Sweeney cut the lead to one at 62-61 at 9:54 with two more foul shots.  The lead grew back to three at 64-61 when sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) made a jumper, but Angers made it a one-point game with two foul shots at 9:13. Following baskets by B-W's Farrell and JCU's Hester, Krakowiak made it 67-65 when he made two charity tosses at 8:33 .  Then Shontz tied it at 67-67 with two more foul shots at 8:20 and JCU took its first lead of the game at 69-67 at 7:44 when Hester canned a jumper.


Fairhurst gave the lead back to B-W at 70-69 when he canned a three-pointer at 6:44 and Umbel added to it with one of two foul shots at 6:19 to make it 71-69. Crowe then pushed the lead to five at 74-69 when he canned a triple at 6:01, but Patrick Sweeney made two more foul shots at 5:47 to make the score 74-71 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. Payne pushed the lead back to five with two foul shots at 5:26 left and made it a six-point game at 5:08 when he made one of two foul shots. Umbel pushed the advantage to eight points at 79-71 when Umbel tipped in a missed shot at 4:16.


But back came JCU as Shontz made a foul shot at 4:09 and Harnett hit two more at 4:06 to make it a 79-74 B-W lead. Following a B-W turnover, Shontz made a three-pointer to cut the lead to 79-77 at 3:25, and after a missed Yellow Jacket shot, Shontz made two more foul shots to tie it at 79-79 with 2:29 remaining.


With 1:52 left, Cabbil canned one of two foul shots for a one-point lead at 80-79, but Hartnett gave the lead back to the Blue Streaks at 82-80 with a triple at 1:43 to go.  Hester pushed the lead to 83-80 with 40 seconds left when he made one of two free throws. Payne cut the advantage to 83-81 when he made one of two charity tosses with 39 seconds left. With 15 seconds left, senior guard Joey Meyer made the first of two foul shots to make it an 84-81 game before B-W called timeout to "ice" Meyer.  Following the timeout, Meyer made his second free throw for an 85-81 advantage.


B-W received a three-pointer from Fairhurst with five seconds left to make it 85-84.  The Yellow Jackets then fouled Meyer with 4.1 seconds left and he made both foul shots to make it 87-84. Fairhurst was then fouled with one second left and made one of two foul shots for an 87-85 game. JCU's Conor Sweeney ended the game with two more free throws with less than a second left for the 89-85 win


B-W returns to action this Saturday, January 7 when it travels to Bexley to play Capital University in an OAC game at The Capital Center at 2:00 p.m.

The games are the January 28 doubleheader versus Wilmington and the February 18 twinbill versus Ohio Northern University.
