PASADENA, Calif. – The starting five scored all but seven of Mount Saint Mary's points as they knocked off Caltech 73-60 in a non-conference men's basketball match-up on Tuesday evening.

After a nip-and-tuck start to the opening half, the Knights grabbed control of the game with a late spurt. There were two ties and three lead changes with neither team holding a lead bigger than six points in the contest's first 10-plus minutes.

Michael Edwards gave the Beavers (5-6) their final lead of the game at 21-20 with a three-pointer at the 9:30 mark of the first stanza. The visitors proceeded to finish the half on a 22-8 scoring run in taking a 42-29 lead into halftime.

During the final 9:30 of the opening stanza, Caltech was held to three field goals on 13 attempts while Mount Saint Mary's (6-4) missed only one of their 10 shots from the field in building their intermission lead. The Knights had one turnover while dishing out eight assists to aid in their first half efforts.

Mount Saint Mary's kept their lead to at least eight points during the first 10 minutes of the final half before the Beavers made a push. Trailing 57-46, the Beavers Pang Wang nailed back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive possessions to bring the Caltech deficit to 57-52 with 8:43 left in the game. It was as close as the home squad got down the stretch. Mount Saint Mary's pushed their lead back to double figures with a 13-3 scoring burst over the next six-plus minutes to seal the game.

Carlos Valdez posted his seventh double-double of the season with a 16-point, 10-rebound effort to pace the Mount Saint Mary's attack. Joe Stabach had a team best 19 points while Kevin Milella (13) and Chris Pisciotta (10) rounded out the double figure scorers for the Knights. Fellow starter Donte Howell had eight points while grabbing a game high six steals.

Michael Edwards had a team best 16 points for the Beavers. Pan Wang contributed a career high 13 points on the strength of a 5-for-8 effort from the field. Bryan Joel pitched in a 10-point effort off the bench.

Caltech begins SCIAC play on Saturday evening when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 p.m.
