LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Lynchburg Hornets pulled away in the second half Wednesday night for a 92-78 victory, spoiling a huge triple-double effort by Bridgewater sophomore Ronnie Thomas.
Thomas filled up the stat sheet, finishing the night with 17 points, 22 rebounds and 10 assists, but it wasn't enough against the fast-paced Lynchburg attack.
The Eagles played a solid first half and some stellar outside shooting from beyond the arc helped the Eagles take a double-digit lead. Bridgewater led 37-27 at the 4:24 mark when Benaiah Wise knocked down a 3-pointer, but the Hornets closed the half with a strong run to pull even with the Eagles.
Lynchburg hit the Eagles with a 14-4 spurt to tie the score at 41-41 before a driving layup by Thomas with seven seconds left gave Bridgewater a 43-41 lead at the break.
The Hornets came out strong in the second and slowly pulled away from the Eagles behind the lights-out shooting of big-man Nate Campbell.
The Eagles had no answer for Campbell in the second half as the Hornets forward knocked down a variety of jumpers ranging from the 15-foot area out to the bonus line. Campbell led five Hornets in double figures with a game-high 22 points with 20 of those coming in the second half.
Senior Cody Griffith returned from a six-game absence due to an anke injury and led the Eagles with 20 points. Aaron Adams came off the bench and added 13 for the Eagles.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Eagles, now 4-8 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC. Lynchburg improves to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
