Macalester tops Carleton for first win

Justin Wasik (So., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) drove the lane and scored the game-winning basket with :06 to play as Macalester claimed its first win of the season, a 61-59 MIAC victory over visiting Carleton Monday night at the Leonard Center.

Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) had his third straight game with at least 25 points and 10 rebounds, finishing with 26 points, 10 boards, three blocked shots, three assists and three steals to lead the way for the Scots.

Bert Yaffe(Fy., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) netted 11 points for the Scots, who move to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in MIAC . Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis) grabbed 14 rebounds and Hans Erickson (Fy., La Crosse, Wis. / Logan)handed out seven assists. Macalester shot 58% in the second half to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit.

The Scots end a eight-game losing streak to Carleton, last year's MIAC co-champions.

Carleton's Tom Sawatzke scored 19 of his team-high 24 points in the first half for the Knights, who led 34-27 at the intermission. Scott Theisen scored 12 points and Taylor Hanson added 11. Carleton turned the ball over just four times on the night.

Macalester played strong defense in the early going and the Scots led 18-6 at the 11:57 mark of the opening half. Carleton's Sawatzke started nailing threes as Carleton finished off the period by out-scoring the home team 28-9 going into the intermission to open up a seven-point lead at the break (34-27).

The Scots re-grouped at halftime and went 15-for-26 from the field in the second period to pull out the win. Mac re-gained the lead 43-41 on a Peters three-pointer with 12:18 to play and the rest of the contest was close throughout. Peters' final bucket put Macalester on top 59-54 with 2:18 to go, but Carleton came back to tie the score with :41 left. Wasik's spinning layup with :05.8 to go gave Mac its winning margin.

Macalester goes for two in a row Wednesday (Jan. 4) when it plays at Augsburg.
