Scots Tame Bearcats 98-80 in James C. Campbell Tournament

The Maryville College men's basketball team earned an opening round victory of the second annual James C. Campbell Memorial Basketball Tournament with a 98-80 win over Rust College on Tuesday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

Oscar Butler's first half seven rebounds and Christian Ford's 10 point effort before the intermission put Maryville up 39-37 at the half. Ford's half court connection as the buzzer sounded gave the Scots a slight advantage. The Bearcats deposited 18 of their 37 points within the paint.

The second half saw the Scots shoot at a 60% clip (19-for-32) while taking advantage of their charity stripe opportunities by depositing 17-of-21 free-throws to pull ahead. MC forced 11 total turnovers and converted 13 points off Rust miscues.

Rust (5-8) was led by four players scoring in double digits. William Montgomery and Markeith Wilson each finished with 18 points while Shun Thompson added 14 points. Larry Veasley posted 11 points and seven rebounds.

Maryville (8-5) defeated Rust for the second time this season behind the game-high 23 points of Milton Stanley. The senior was 9-for-13 from the floor while dishing out a game-high nine assists. Joey Bodewig was strong in the post with 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting and a 10-for-12 effort from the free-throw line. Wes Lambert connected for 16 points that included a 4-for-7 performance from beyond the arc. Christian Ford finished with 13 points while Oscar Butler paced MC with eight boards.

In earlier tournament action, Wittenberg (8-3) defeated Huntingdon (1-8) by the score of 75-62. The Tigers were paced by Cam Walton's 18 points while Zack Leahy and Alex Brandt deposited 17 and 16 points respectively. Huntingdon was led by Jason Varney's 18 points.

On Wednesday, the tournament will conclude with Rust challenging Huntingdon at 2:00. Maryville will host Wittenberg with a 4:00 scheduled tip-off to conclude the tournament.
