SALISBURY, Md. — Elizabethtown College men's basketball traveled to Salisbury for the first time in team history Saturday, but could not come up with its desired outcome. The Sea Gulls got 48 points in the first half, balanced scoring from both its starters and its bench and walked away with an 83-63 non-conference victory against the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown (2-7) hopped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by
Joe Schwalm and a bucket by
Steve Ennis. The hosts didn't come up with their first bucket for nearly four minutes, but their offensive pieces went to work shortly thereafter. Salisbury claimed its first lead of the afternoon, 8-7, with 14:51 to go in the first half on a Trent Epps layup.
The teams traded barbs over the next two minutes before Chris Viqueira hit a trey that put the Sea Gulls (7-3) up 14-13 and started a 13-0 run for the team that was ranked in the d3hoops.com Top 25 as recently as two weeks ago.
Trying to carry last Saturday's winning mojo to this afternoon's game, E-town sliced the lead to six late in the half on a pair of
Dan Silver free throws. Four different Salisbury players would score in the final 2:18, including Dylan Robeson's buzzer-beating three, as the home team scored nine of the half's last 11 points for a 48-35 halftime lead.
Mike Maczko, one of three Sea Gulls to tie for the team lead in points with 14, gave Salisbury a 22-point lead —its largest of the game— with just over eight minutes remaining. Like they did in last year's game at Thompson Gymnasium, SU shot the ball at a blistering rate. This time, however, a near 60 percent shooting effort from the floor was rewarded with a victory.
The Sea Gulls also won the rebounding battle 38-25, getting eight from Maczko and six from Jason Nwosu. Nwosu also racked up 14 points, as did Viqueira. Mike Atkins had 13.
Elizabethtown got 10 points each from
Steve Ennis and
Will Schlosser, but the sophomore and freshman were the only E-town players in double figures.
Phil Wenger scored eight points, while
Dan Silver added seven. The Blue Jays were just 18-of-53 from the floor, a 34 percent clip. Senior
Kyle McConnell contributed a team-high four assists, while Silver also came up with three steals in defeat.
Tomorrow afternoon E-town plays its last game of the 2011 calendar year when it hosts McDaniel at 3 p.m.
