Payne Has Double-Double as Baldwin-Wallace Wins at Muskingum, 68-63
NEW CONCORD, OHIO  –  Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team beat host Muskingum University, 68-63, today (Saturday, December 17, 2011) in an OAC game on Performance Court in the Muskingum Recreation Center. The victory was B-W's fifth in its last six games.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the OAC while Muskingum fell to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the league.


In addition to Payne for the B-W, sophomore forward Tyler Farrell (Brunswick) scored 11 points and grabbed nine caroms.  The Fighting Muskies were led by senior forward Josh Brindley with 22 points. In addition, senior forward Kyle Clinedinst had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and freshman guard Logan Kimble also had 12 points.


The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0x lead at the 19:40 mark when Farrell made a layup, but the Fighting Muskies came right back to take a 3-2 lead at 18:19 when senior guard Carson Thomas made a three-pointer. That was the first of six lead changes before Muskingum tied the game at 13-13 at 11:39 when sophomore guard Clay Owings made a jump shot.
After Muskingum grabbed a 15-13 lead, B-W sophomore guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) nailed his second three-pointer at 8:57 for a 16-15 advantage. At 7:53, Farrell made it a three-point lead at 18-15 with two foul shots
Muskingum then went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-18 lead at 6:14 when freshman guard Logan Kimble drove to the hoop and scored.  B-W came right back with a 6-0 run of its own and took a 24-21 lead at 4:07 when Payne made two foul shots.
Despite missing five-of-six free throws in the final 2:44, the Muskies still outscored B-W 6-4 the remainder of the period and trailed 28-27 at halftime. A jumper with eight seconds left by Clinedinst pulled Muskingum to within one of the Jackets.

In the second half, after Payne gave B-W a three-point lead at 30-27 at 19:46, the teams traded hoops on six straight possessions before Payne gave the Yellow Jackets their biggest lead at 37-33 when he made one of two foul shots.
Undaunted, Muskingum went on a 7-2 run to regain the lead at 40-39 at 14:36 when Kimble made a layup. The teams again on three straight possessions before senior forward Josh Brindley made a three-pointer at 12:54 to extend the lead to 45-43.  But B-W got a trey from junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Hts./ Walsh Jesuit) at 11:40 to give it a 46-45 lead.
After a B-W's Payne layup at 10:32 extended the lead to three at 48-45, Brindley answered with a jumper at 10:12 to make it 48-47. A three-pointer by freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) at 9:32 gave B-W another four-point lead at 51-47, and that led to an exchange of five straight alternating hoops. The Jackets led 55-53 with 6:48 left when Brindley scored for the Fighting Muskies.
A layup by junior guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) at 6:12 pushed the lead back to four points, and following a Muskie miss, Payne scored on a layup off a fast break, was fouled and made the free throw for the biggest lead of the contest at 60-53 with 5:55 to go.
Clinedist ended the run with two foul shots at 5:40 to make it 60-55 but sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) restored the advantage to seven at 62-55 at 5:12.
Again the Muskies cut it to five on a Clinedinst putback at 4:40, Crowe made it seven again at 3:49 with a jumper to make the score 64-57. Then the Muskies decided to make it close.
Muskingum outscored B-W  6-1 to close to two points at 65-63 when Clinedinst made two foul shots.
Again B-W responded when Payne grabbed a rebound and scored with 31.7 seconds left for a 67-63 advantage. Following a charging foul on Clinedinst, his fifth foul, and a pair of turnovers, Crowe ended matters by making a foul shot with 6.3 seconds left.

B-W is back in action on Tuesday, December 20 when it travels to Lexington, Kentucky to participate in the annual two-day Don Lane Tournament at Transylvania (Ky.) University. The Yellow Jackets open play on Tuesday, Dec. 20 against 17th-ranked and 8-0, unbeaten Wabash (Ind.) College at 5:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Dec. 21, the consolation game will be played at 5:00 p.m. and the championship game at 7:00 p.m.  Host Transylvania plays Hendrix (Ark.) College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.


Media and fans are reminded that the B-W will televise two men's and women's basketball doubleheaders onregional cable TV giant SportsTime Ohio. The games are the January 28 doubleheader versus Wilmington and the February 18 twinbill versus Ohio Northern University. B-W has broadcast more of its athletics events on regional cable TV than any other Division III school
