Bradley uses outside shot to lift Warriors past league favorite Alvernia, 68-66

More news about: Lycoming
READING, Pa. – Alvernia University showed off why it allows the fewest points in the Commonwealth Conference in Saturday, Dec. 3's game with the top-scoring offense in the league, but the Lycoming College men's basketball game was still able to grind out another 68-66 come-from-behind win on the road at the Physical Education Center to stay undefeated.

"We could easily be 2-4 right now," Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said. "Our guys have just believed and worked their tails off. I think we are becoming a better team each game because of that."

Down 59-56 with 4:24 left, the Warriors (6-0 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) got to work, as a steal by senior Mike Bradley(Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) led to a three-shot possession that was capped by a floater by freshman Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch-Plains Fanwood). After a miss, Bradley loaded his third 3-pointer of the game on a give from junior Jerald Williams (Bladensburg, Md./Riverdale), giving Lycoming a 61-59 lead.

Williams, despite not scoring a point, posted nine assists, three rebounds and three steals to tie the school's career record of 181 set by Geoff Boblick from 1994-98.

After each team missed a shot, Dougher fired up a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:05 left, giving Lycoming a five-point advantage. After each team traded a pair of free throws, Terence Bridges hit a layup and Josh Vargas added another with seven seconds left to make it 66-65. Forced to foul, Alvernia (2-3 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) sent junior Anthony Martin(Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) to the line, where he hit the back end. A Lycoming foul with 1.3 seconds left sent Vargas to the line where he hit the back end of the free throws and Martin added another free throw with 0.3 seconds left  to round out the scoring.

The Warriors scored 20 points off turnover, as they forced 16 turnovers and allowed just six, helping overcome a 40-30 Crusader advantage in free throws.

The Crusaders built a 19-12 lead  with 10:44 left in the first half, but Lycoming answered with a 22-5 run that was keyed by seven points from Bradley, as the 6-5 center hit one of his treys during the run. However, Alvernia fought back from the 10-point deficit with a 13-2 run to close the half, as Chris Davis hit a trey with 15 seconds left to take a 37-36 lead going into the half.

The Warriors took a three-point lead three minutes into the second half after a back-to-back shots from Martin, but the Crusaders kept the game close and with the score tied at 47 with 12:26 left, Alvernia went on a 7-0 run to make it 54-47 with 10:17 left. Lycoming got back into the game on a 3-pointer with 7:24 left from Dougher, as Lycoming scored six points in a row to make it 57-56 with 4:48 left, setting up the ending.

Bradley led the Warriors with 19 points and three rebounds and Dougher added a career-high 17 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

"He did a great job," Rancourt said of Bradley. "I am thrilled with his effort. I can't ask for any more from Mike right now. He's had to adjust as far as his style. We used him for three years as a physical, around the rim guy and he's just done a wonderful job stepping out and taking advantage of his ability to shoot the ball. When Patrick is shooting in a comfort zone, he is fantastic."

Martin posted 14 points, three assists and two steals. Rudy posted seven points, four rebounds and a steal.

Brian Nerney led the Crusaders with 14 points and eight rebounds and Brian Parker added 13 points and eight rebounds. Stefan Thompson added 11 points and three treys and Josh Vargas also posted 11 points. Preseason All-American Cory Boone was held to five points and nine rebounds.

The Warriors get back into action on Tuesday, Dec. 6, when they face Juniata in a non-conference rivalry match.
