Warhawks Upset by Pointers 79-77

The Pointers used a 22-4 early first half run to take a 16 point lead, 24-8 with 11:00 left. Whitewater answered with a 22-9 run, with nine from Chris Davis, spanning the last eight minutes of the first half to pull to within three points 36-33 headed into the lockerroom.

UW-SP shot 62% from the floor in the first half to Whitewater's 48%. UW-W countered with six points off of Pointer turnovers.

The lead changed six times in the second half. Davis opened the second half with two quick buckets giving Whitewater a 37-36 lead. The Warhawks widened the gap to six after two free throws from Eric Bryson made the score 48-42 with 14:56 left in the game. The Pointers answered with a 7-0 run to retake the lead 49-48 with 12:43 to go. With the score tied 53-53 at 11:40, UW-SP put together an 8-2 run to take an eight point advantage. The largest lead of the half would come at 6:24 with Stevens Point ahead 70-60. UW-W scored 17 of the next 26 points to pull to within two with 1:54 remaining but the Pointer defense stiffened and forced misses on the last three Warhawk attempts. UW-SP had the 79-77 advantage when the final buzzer rang giving Whitewater its first loss of the season.

The Pointers shot a blistering 74% from the field in the second half making 14-19 including 4-8 from behind the arc and 11-12 from the free throw line. UW-W shot 54% (15-28), also made four threes and made 10-11 from the free throw stripe in the second half.

The Warhawk defense forced 17 turnovers in the game with three Warhawks recording two steals apiece. The rest of the stats show the even story of a game won by just two points.

Davis became just the eleventh men's basketball player in UW-W history to score 40 or points in a game and is the first to do so in the 2000's. Davis' 41 ties for sixth in the school's record book matching numbers posted by Don Paulsen in 1969, Duane Vance in 1987 and Eric Burdette in 1996. He also tied for the game high in rebounds grabbing seven boards. Bryson and Luke Knoble added 10 points each for Whitewater. Quardell Young dished out six assists to lead all players. Teammates Bryson and Alex Merg added four more assists and two steals each in the game.

Dan Tillema led UW-SP with 35 points followed by Trevor Hass' 17 and Tyler Tillema's 16. Dan Tillema tied Davis for game honors in rebounds with seven.

Whitewater is now 8-1 overall this season and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Point improves to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.

The Warhawks will compete in the National Invitational Tournament hosted by Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas Tuesday, December 20 and Wednesday, December 21 with games against Willamette and Whitworth respectively.
