Caltech topples Macalester despite 28 points by Peters

Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) scored a career-best 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, but visiting Caltech, held off the Scots for a 71-65 decision Monday night at the Leonard Center. Peters drained 5-of-6 of his three-point shots and was 10-for-16 overall. He also blocked two shots.

Justin Wasik (Jr., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) scored 15 points and Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Wasik was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Hans Erickson (Fy., La Crosse, Wis. / Logan) distributed four assists.

Both teams shot well, with the Scots shooting 48% and the Beavers 46%. Caltech had an 18-8 turnover advantage, which led to a 24-10 lead in points off turnovers.

The California Institute of Technology was led by Todd Cramer, who finished with 19 points and 10 assists. Michael Edwards pumped in 22 points.

The opening 20 minutes was very close throughout and featured 16 lead changes and six ties. The 16th and final lead change gave the Beavers a 39-38 halftime advantage. Cramer had nine of his 10 assists in the first period.

There were no lead changes in the second half, but the contest was close throughout. A Peters three-pointer off a Marshall pass brought Macalester to within two points at 66-64 with 1:57 remaining. The Beavers, however, hung on with free throws.

Caltech is 4-2 and Macalester is 0-8.

The Scots are off until they host Wisconsin-River Falls Dec. 29.
