POULTNEY, Vt. – Andy Ball (Hermon, Maine) Scored 35 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a 65-55 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win at Green Mountain College on Friday evening. Ball cashed in on 23-of-26 trips to the charity stripe, setting a new Maine Maritime record.

Ball's 23 points at the line tops Adam St. John's record for free throws made in a game. St. John hit 20 against Bowdoin in January of 1984. Ball, who had four steals and two blocks, was only one of three Mariners (2-5, 1-1 NAC) that made it to the line. Shawn Dostie (Bowdoinham, Maine), who posted a  17-point, 14-rebound double-double, clicked on five of six shots from the stripe to go with three blocked shots. Tyler Pineo (Corinth, Maine) went two-for-two at the line en route to seven points. All told, Maine Maritime went 30-of-34 at the foul line.

Green Mountain (2-5, 0-3 NAC) was whistled for 22 of the game's 41 fouls. The Eagles' had two players, Robert Holloway and Jeremiah Aponte, foul out. The Mariners' Dostie also saw his night shortened by the officials.

The teams traded leads throughout much of the first half, before a Ball layup with 6:32 left in the period put the Mariners out in front through the break. Maine Maritime extended the lead with a pair of free throws from Dostie and a jumper from Pineo before a Ball trifecta made it a six-point game, 23-17, with 3:33 left in the opening stanza.  It was the largest lead for either team in the first 20 minutes.

The teams went to the locker room with MMA in front 25-19.

Ball started the second half scoring with a pair at the line, sparking an 11-0 run that made it 36-21. Green Mountain responded with a dozen unanswered points to cut it to a three-point deficit, 36-33 with just under 13 minutes left in the game.

The Eagles finally recaptured the lead five minutes later when Carnelius Green drained a three making it 41-40 Green Mountain. Green finished the game with a team-high 18 points, matching the output of Aponte.

It was nip and tuck for a handful of minutes before Aponte picked up his fourth foul. Dostie hit a pair for the eighth and final lead change of the night, giving the Mariners a 44-43 edge with 4:46 remaining. MMA held 10 with 1:01 left before the Eagles made a final charge. An Aponte three-pointer, followed by a pair at the line made it a seven-point game with 32 seconds left.

Ball, who was on point throughout, turned it over allowing a Green layup to make it a five-point game with 15 seconds left. Ball was fouled going up for three on the next possession, then Green Mountain's bench was hit with a technical. Ball sunk four consecutive free throws, and then collected his own rebound before being hacked again. He sunk his final free throw of the night with one tick left for the 65-55 final.

The Mariners return to action tomorrow afternoon at Castleton State.
